CREE introduces the LRP-38 LED lamp that provides a tightly-focused beam, exceptional color quality, extended life and unmatched energy-efficiency.

Designed for display and retail installations, the Cree LRP-38 is a narrow beam spotlight for use in supermarket produce displays, department stores, and museums--especially where exceptional color quality is valued. The lamp is currently being evaluated in grocery, department and furniture stores, as well as in big box retailers, where it replaced halogen and ceramic metal halide bulbs.

"The technology in Cree's LRP-38 LED lamp is by far the most promising that I have seen yet. I am pleased to see that Cree has definitely raised the bar for serious LED lamp solutions," said Brandon Melton, Corporate Purchasing Manager at Chipotle Restaurants.

The Cree LRP-38 uses Cree TrueWhite(TM) technology to generate a CRI of 92 at a color temperature of 2700K. The tightly-focused beam delivers a center beam candlepower of 4000 with a beam angle of 20 degrees. This UL-listed light is designed to replace 50W - 90W halogen PAR38 bulbs, in various applications. The input power is only 12 Watts, resulting in a total delivered minimum efficacy of 42 lumens per Watt. The lamp is designed to last 50,000 hours in open track fixtures or 35,000 in non-IC commercial recessed downlights.

The lamp has a unique optical design that maximizes the amount of light within the beam while minimizing the source brightness- so the eye is focused on the merchandise, not the light source.

With this product Cree extends the quality and performance of their award-winning LED lights into beam-controlled retrofit lamps. Neal Hunter, Cree LED Lighting president claims that "LEDs contain no harmful mercury and because they don't emit large amounts of heat, UV or infrared light, they protect what they are illuminating--everything from priceless art to fresh tomatoes. Lighting customers should sacrifice nothing in the pursuit of beautiful, energy-efficient light, and with the LRP-38, they don't have to."

The Cree LRP-38 will be sold through Cree LED Lighting sales channels and is currently shipping in volume, with high preliminary demand.

LED Retrofits for Fluorescent and CFL Lighting

Fluorescent lighting has been in use for over 50 years in the workplace, our homes, the bank, and virtually everywhere we shop. The reason fluorescent lighting is so popular is that it uses one-fourth the energy that incandescent lighting does. Another reason for their popularity is that standard fluorescent lamps do not get hot like incandescent or quartz halogen lamps.

Light Emitting Designs, produces environmental lighting solutions that include LED retrofits for both fluorescent and CFL bulbs.

"In a restaurant -- where people must look as aesthetically pleasing to each other as the food does to them -- the quality of light is crucial - the type of fixture and the kind of light they produce," says Re:Vision's Jeremy Avellino, an architect/designer and former builder.

For now, he has chosen compact fluorescents (CFLs) that cast a surprising bluish light. They'll use nearly one-quarter the energy incandescent bulbs would and will last 10,000 hours or more.

CFLs produce varying shades of white light, identified by color temperature measured on the Kelvin scale, according to the Environmental Protection Agency's Energy Star Web site (www.energystar.gov). Lower Kelvin numbers mean the light has a warmer color; higher numbers mean the light has a cooler cast. But not all manufacturers list color temperature on their packaging.

Most CFLs on the market offer soft or warm light (2,700K to 3,000K), comparable to an incandescent, that will enhance warmer room colors such as red, yellow and orange, the Web site says. At higher Kelvin color temperatures (3,500 to 6,500K), CFLs will emit more white to bluish-white light that enhances cooler colors (blue, green, violet).

"Our eyes have been tuned to incandescent bulbs for years," Avellino says. "After you get used to compact fluorescent . . . people look better."

But even in mid-renovation, decisions are being reconsidered at the White Dog. The CFLs are an interim step, to be replaced ultimately with light-emitting diodes (LEDs).

LEDs are Environmentally Sound, Use Less Energy, and Last Longer

LEDs are the next wave because they are more environmentally sound, use less energy and last longer than both CFLs and incandescents, Wicks and Avellino say.

LED Colors are Endlessly Creative!

And the light they cast allows for any number of tones and moods. "You can totally name your color," Wicks says.

LED Lights for Exterior AND Interior

Though she is starting to use LEDs in exterior lighting, as the technology advances Wicks plans to use them inside, too - they are easier to dim, an important feature for a restaurant.

Don't Stop with Creative Rays -- Create Environmentally Friendly Fixtures, too!

For environmentally aware designs, he uses life's flotsam and junk: old brass instruments, discarded crystal candy dishes, colanders, antique glass jars, car and motorcycle parts.

Being ahead of the game in repurposing what's available is what led developer Tony Goldman to Muller's door.

Goldman Properties helped create New York City's SoHo district and Miami's South Beach from once-trashed warehouses and old hotel spaces. In Philadelphia, he's taken on a once-worn-out area of South 13th Street between Locust and Chestnut.

In 2007, Philips Lumileds released the LUXEON K2 warm and neutral white LEDs that offer new lighting possibilities

Warm-white and neutral-white LUXEON K2 emitters and a LUXEON K2 Star part  can be specified with any standard white emitter.

The new white colors have typical correlated color temperatures (CCT) of 3000K and 4100K and a color rendering index (CRI) of 80 and 75 respectively. The CCT range for LUXEON K2 now extends from 2670K to 10,000K and a new finer color bin structure allows for better overall selection.

Unlike most power LEDs that are limited to 700mA, LUXEON K2 warm white and neutral white LEDs can be run up to 1500mA and a junction temperature of 150°C. The new warm-white and neutral white can deliver more than 130lm and 140lm respectively. LUXEON K2 delivers more usable light at virtually any drive current and junction temperature condition.

“With the increases in light output performance and efficacy, there is expanding demand for power LEDs that deliver the quality of light required for general lighting applications,” said Steve Landau, Director of Marketing Communications. “Designers of residential applications, such as recessed can lights need uniformity, high color rendering and a warm white color temperature at 3000K. In many retail and commercial applications, a cooler temperature of 4100K is desired. With the new binning and phosphor technologies in LUXEON K2, the needs of lighting designers in both markets can be addressed.”

Lighting designers consider several critical “quality of light” factors when evaluating white LEDs: color temperature (CCT), color rendering (CRI) and color uniformity are three of the most important. The new LUXEON K2 parts address CCT and CRI and Philips Lumileds phosphor expertise and technologies ensure the highest degree of color uniformity resulting in white LEDs that are as much as 7 times more uniform that other white power LEDs.

LUXEON K2 Star, like the configuration already available in other LUXEON product families, consists of a white LUXEON K2 emitter mounted onto a metal core pc board (MCPCB). This configuration allows for rapid prototyping and production in a wide range of applications without the need to create custom level 2 boards. LUXEON Star products have been an industry standard for many years and been the configuration of choice for everything from architectural and entertainment lighting to emergency and portable lighting. Complete product information is available on the company’s website and in the LUXEON K2 datasheet also available online. LUXEON K2 warm-white and neutral-white power LEDs are in-stock and available for immediate delivery from Future Electronics. LUXEON K2 Star is stocked in limited quantities and interested parties should contact Future Electronics with their specific needs.

In September, 2007, Cree announced it achieved R&D results of 129 lumens per watt for a cool-white LED and 99 lumens per watt for a warm-white LED.

These are the best results reported for packaged, high-power LEDs, and indicate that Cree is extending its lead in solid-state lighting through its continued investments in LED technology.

The results have been verified by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). NIST’s tests confirmed that the cool-white (5,813 K) LED produced 135.7 lumens of light output and achieved 129 lumens per watt efficacy. The warm-white (2,950 K) LED produced 104.2 lumens of light output and achieved 99 lumens per watt efficacy. The institute tests LEDs at 350 mA and measures the output after five minutes of operation to ensure thermal stabilization.

In coming years, such investments in core LED technology could lead to products that replace traditional light sources in all commercial applications.

Customers may see these technology advancements in commercial products
within 12 to 24 months.

“To replace traditional light sources, LEDs need to provide both high light output and high efficacy,” comments John Edmond, Cree co-founder and director of advanced optoelectronics. “Cree continues to push the limits of LED performance in order to realize the potential of the LED lighting revolution – energy-efficient, long-lasting LED light.”

IHOP Adopts Cree LED Lighting After Comparing LEDs to CFLs

International House of Pancakes (IHOP) franchise in Northern Virginia, owned and operated by Wilhelm Restaurant Group, Inc., has adopted Cree LED lighting products as the preferred lighting for all existing and future restaurants.

Since testing began in January, 2008:

* More than 100 retrofit LR6 six-inch LED downlights have been installed in two locations,
* Six additional locations have retrofit plans in progress, and
* Construction plans for a new IHOP have been modified to specify Cree LR6 LED downlights.

Paul Belle, vice president Wilhelm Restaurant Group, Inc., wanted to move away from conventional, incandescent lighting toward a more sustainable, energy-efficient light. He was considering compact fluorescent lights (CFLs) but changed his mind after seeing Cree’s LED products.

“Cree’s LED lights were much more impressive than CFLs,” said Belle. “LED light is more energy-efficient, generates less heat, has a longer life, and it’s just a better quality light, in my opinion.”

According to Belle, the IHOP employees prefer the LED lighting as it is very bright, easy on their eyes and enhances the general appearance of the food. “The light is not offensive like CFLs can be; the LEDs give off a warm, white light,” Belle said. “The best way I can describe it is to compare the light to a high-definition television. Everything under the LED lighting appears to have a better clarity, like HDTV versus standard definition.

“It is normal to invest a little more in a new technology, but it’s worth it. Somebody has to be first and I’m glad to be on the cutting edge,” Belle said.

Cree’s LED lighting products use approximately 85 percent less energy and last up to 50 times longer than incandescent lights, and they use 50 percent less energy and last up to five times longer than CFLs. Previously, lighting products in the industry fell short in color quality, efficiency or longevity. Cree has created a dimmable LED lighting solution that leads the industry in a combination of all three critical elements.

Cree Is A Market Leader in LED Technology Development

A North Carolina-based LED research company, LED Lighting Fixtures, announced that it had created the world's most energy-efficient LED light, one that uses 5.8 watts of electricity to create as much light as a 60-watt incandescent lightbulb. And following that news, LED Lighting Fixtures also announced that they are now part of Cree, Inc.

The company is developing a lamp that uses less energy than its current LED fixtures but emits the same amount of light. A federal study by the National Institute of Standards and Technology confirms that the product is the most efficient in the world. It uses 5.8 watts of power, compared with 60 watts for an equally bright incandescent bulb.

According to the National Institute report, the new fixture uses less than 9 percent of the energy consumed by common bulbs and less than 30 percent of that consumed by fluorescent lights. LLF's best existing product consumes 15 percent of the energy used by an incandescent bulb and 50 percent of that used by fluorescents.

Hunter said he hopes to debut the brighter and more efficient lamps by the end of 2008. The first buyers will likely be wholesale distributors, followed by consumers off store shelves by 2009.

A road-paving mistake was going to cost over $9,000 to cut the concrete, lay conduit and then repave it. The developer was desperate for other options to light a  6' x 9' Canyon Pines sign. A local solar contractor was able to provide a reliable, efficient and economical solution.

LEDtronics Inc. provided an efficient, largely hidden, and bright LED lighting solution. Mr. Bruce Howard, a LEDtronics representative from Howard Industrial Sales Inc., assisted Canyon Pines with  two  LEDtronics  LED Flood Lights.

These LED floodlights are designed to run on 12 volts DC with solar panels. This allowed lighting the sign without incurring costly landscaping and electrical power line costs. The LED floodlights provide cold white lighting (8,000K) using 5mm LEDs that remain cool enough to touch. These LEDs consume only 12 watts of power per floodlight compared to the power hungry 40 watt or 100 watt incandescent spot lights normally used in this application.

Now the whole system can be run on a 123 watt solar panel and a small battery bank. The solar cells charge the battery during the day, which in turn powers the LED floodlights at night.

The installation of this solar power LED lighting system only took two people one and a half days to complete. To extend the life of the system and operate during long periods of cloudy weather, three 86 AH Gel batteries are provided as well. To provide a clean and unobstructed view of the land they hid most of the lighting system inside artificial rocks.

The developer uses these floodlights 8 hours a night. With the electrical rates of 12 cents per kWH, batteries lasting 10 to 15 years, a warranty on the solar panel for 25 years, and LED light lifespan of 50,000 hours, he expects this system to pay for itself in 5 years.

If you consider the alternative cost for running 120volt electrical lines this solar powered lighting system paid for itself immediately.

 PAR20 LED Lamps from LEDtronics

PAR20 LED Short-Neck light bulbs.

These direct incandescent replacement bulbs combine advanced Light Emitting Diode (LED) technologies, standard 25mm Edison screw bases and light-optimizing designs to produce vivid light.

PAR20 LED bulbs are available in three light emitting angles (15°, 20°, and 22°) and in 120 volts AC. Other voltages like 12V to 240V AC or DC are available for qualified customers.

PAR20 Short-Neck LED bulbs measure 3.50 inches long and have a 2.53 inch diameter making them ideal for small spotlighting tasks, artwork accenting, and recessed lighting for ambient illumination. With a power draw of only 2.5 Watts the savings quickly add up over the standard PAR20 incandescent bulbs they replace.

The standard PAR20 LED colors available are Warm White and XWarm White (3000 Kelvin), Cool White (7000 Kelvin), Super Red (633nm) and Aqua Green (525nm). Other LED colors as well as Infrared lamps are offered for qualified customers and quantities.

With up to eleven years of LED operating life and five sunlight-visible LED light colors from which to select, solid-state PAR20 LED bulbs are a practical and economical way for architects, retail store display creators, entertainment designers and other lighting professionals to integrate ornamental illumination into maintenance-intensive applications. Additionally, LED cluster lamps continue to provide light even if one or more emitters fail-unlike when the filament breaks inside incandescent bulbs. LEDtronics' PAR20 LED bulbs are designed to perform well in systems subjected to voltage dips or surges. Integrated current-limited resistors ensure that no circuit modifications are required.

Colored lenses or filters are not needed since LEDs emit colored light that is determined by the composition of the semiconductor material comprising the diode. Intensity and color remain stable over the lamp's lifetime.

LED technology is an energy-efficient directional light source; saving 80% - 90% of energy costs compared to a 30- or 50-Watt incandescent PAR20 lamps. Because LEDs use very little energy, produce little-to-no heat, and are virtually maintenance free the cost savings are substantial.

Solid-state design renders LEDs impervious to electrical and mechanical shock, vibration, frequent switching, and environmental extremes. With an average lifespan of up to 100,000-plus hours (11 years)-up to 50,000 hours for white LEDs-LED bulbs operate reliably year after year. PAR20 LED bulbs are the ideal solution for decorative task lighting and nighttime applications including tracklight fixtures, reading lights, and small ceiling cans. Other applications include large message panels, billboards, scoreboards, time-and-temperature signs, arcade machines, casino accent illumination, and lighting for stages, theaters, carnivals, theme parks and amusement parks. PAR20 LED bulbs can be used as individual pixels in large dot-matrix screens, digital time/temperature signs or full-color display screens.

The LED Dimmer makes it possible to dim all 5VoltsDC to 40VoltsDC LED products such as LED strip lights, LED bulbs and LED floodlights. Since LEDs draw much less current than traditional incandescent bulbs one had to buy a special high-end electronic dimmer to control the desired light levels for their LED lighting application. The DC-to-DC LED Dimmer is ideal to use for all your 12VoltsDC LED products, mix-and-match LED light strips and LED bulbs, maximum load per DC-to-DC Dimmer is 24Watts. The LED Dimmer will enhance your architectural low power high-benefit lighting designs. Here’s an extra advantage in using an LED dimmer: by lowering the current to the LED, you extend the life of the LED.

LED dimming range is 0-100% of input. Input Voltage can be any DC Voltage between 5VoltsDC and 40VoltsDC. Dimmer output Voltage is continuously adjustable between zero and full-on. LED Dimmers operate on minimal no-load current (10-15mA). Power dissipation of the LED dimmer’s drive circuitry is less than 0.7Watts. No extra load is added to the lighting circuit, current draw is only 10-15mA. Not for use with inductive devices such as motors, etc.

No special configuration is needed. LED Dimmer can drive up to 2000 Standard White discrete LEDs or 50 High-Flux LEDs. One unit can dim the supplied power for an entire lighting channel or up to 2Amps, 24Watts maximum of LED bulbs, floodlights, tube lights and light strips. The LED Dimmer can be used with 12VoltsDC solar power systems or connect directly to 120VoltsAC-to-12VoltsDC transformers. LEDTRONICS is California Leader in LED design

Since 1983 LEDtronics has been a leader in designing and manufacturing environmentally friendly low power usage, long life LED bulbs and LED lamps as direct replace to incandescent bulbs.

They focus on delivering LED lighting solutions and products of consistently high quality and strive to exceed  customer’s expectations with new designs to meet  future lighting requirements.

They make the following claims on their website:

  • Our rugged LED bulbs last 100,000 hours, over ten years, which greatly reduces maintenance and replacement costs because LEDs are virtually immune to shock and vibration.

  • Our LED bulbs use a fraction of the electricity (LED lamps use 80% to 90% less energy then the incandescent lamps they replace) necessary to light an incandescent bulb; they significantly reduce power consumption to help achieve energy conservation goals.

  • LED bulbs also remain cool so there is no excessive heat buildup, which can influence building air conditioning costs.
Why LED Bulbs:

Last an average of 100,000 hours (or about ten years). 50,000 hours for White LEDs
Withstand shocks, vibrations, frequent switching and temperature extremes that rapidly incapacitate fragile incandescent lamps.
Reduces maintenance and replacement costs
Are 10 to 50 times more energy-efficient, thus reducing your operating costs by up to 90%.
Produce little to no heat, cool to the touch, so they are safer then traditional lighting products

Ledtronics, Inc. listens -- and many of the new ideas come from their customers. When faced with an "impossible" challenge from one of their customers, the Ledtronics team often finds a new product is created and a new market born in the bargain.

They are expanding markets for LED lighting in the following markets:
Aerospace, Architectural Lighting, Automation, Automotive, Aviation, Broadcasting, Datacomm/Telecomm, Electronic Instrumentation, Elevators, Entertainment, Gaming, Government Agencies, Industrial Automation, Medical, Military / Defense, Panel Indicators, Photo Development, Printed Circuit Boards, Security Sensors, Solar Power Products, Traffic and Safety, Transportation, Utilities and Video.

For example: Architecture / Interior Design

LEDs are emerging as a mainstream tool for architects, interior designers and lighting professionals with the vision to move beyond the limits of incandescent, fluorescent and neon.

LEDTronics pioneered the use of multi-LED arrays on conventional electrical bases. This innovation has opened up a vast spectrum of creative possibilities to any professional dealing with interior or environmental lighting. LED arrays are used as accent lighting in hard-to-reach places where frequent relamping is impractical. With a life span of 100,000 hours (that's more than 10 years), LEDs are far preferable to incandescents in such situations.

SolarLEDs™ provide energy-efficiency vastly greater than conventional lighting, and are ideal for any battery-driven application, or, any time minimal power consumption is required.

StripLights™ and PathLights™ provide directional lighting for steps, stairways and walkways.

Although LEDs can successfully replace incandescent and other forms of illumination in almost all cases, there are some considerations which must be taken into account. Unlike incandescent lamps, LEDs produce light in a single wavelength and a single direction. LEDTronics designs cluster arrays to increase the amount of illumination, or package them as bar graphs or with right angles.

Energy Star EXIT Signs

Earning the ENERGY STAR

  • Exit signs that have earned the ENERGY STAR operate on five watts or less per sign, compared to standard signs, which use as much as 40 watts per sign.
  • When installed throughout a building, qualified exit signs can save hundreds or even thousands of dollars in energy and maintenance costs. One sign alone can save about $10 annually on electricity costs and can last up to 10 years without a lamp replacement, compared to less than one year for an incandescent.
  • Signs that have earned the ENERGY STAR are tested for visibility factors, and come with a five-year manufacturer warranty.

Remember, saving energy prevents pollution.

There are more than 100 million exit signs in use throughout the U.S. Typically lit by incandescent bulbs, these signs consume 30-35 billion kilowatt hours (kWh) hours of energy each year.
