For now, he has chosen compact fluorescents (CFLs) that cast a surprising bluish light. They'll use nearly one-quarter the energy incandescent bulbs would and will last 10,000 hours or more.
CFLs produce varying shades of white light, identified by color temperature measured on the Kelvin scale, according to the Environmental Protection Agency's Energy Star Web site (www.energystar.gov). Lower Kelvin numbers mean the light has a warmer color; higher numbers mean the light has a cooler cast. But not all manufacturers list color temperature on their packaging.
Most CFLs on the market offer soft or warm light (2,700K to 3,000K), comparable to an incandescent, that will enhance warmer room colors such as red, yellow and orange, the Web site says. At higher Kelvin color temperatures (3,500 to 6,500K), CFLs will emit more white to bluish-white light that enhances cooler colors (blue, green, violet).
"Our eyes have been tuned to incandescent bulbs for years,"
Avellino says. "After you get used to compact fluorescent . . . people
look better."
But even in mid-renovation, decisions are being reconsidered at the White Dog. The CFLs are an interim step, to be replaced ultimately with light-emitting diodes (LEDs).
LEDs are Environmentally Sound, Use Less Energy, and Last Longer
LEDs are the next wave because they are more environmentally sound, use less energy and last longer than both CFLs and incandescents, Wicks and Avellino say.
LED Colors are Endlessly Creative!
And the light they cast allows for any number of tones and moods. "You can totally name your color," Wicks says.
LED Lights for Exterior AND Interior
Though she is starting to use LEDs in exterior lighting, as the technology advances Wicks plans to use them inside, too - they are easier to dim, an important feature for a restaurant.

November, 2007 — LEDtronics introduces an addition to its line of drop-in replacement MR16-styled LED bulbs: High-powered 3Watt LED MR16 bulbs.
These new 3Watt MR16 LED bulbs have two big advantages over other MR16 LED bulbs.
First, they are engineered to handle the variations in voltages that may accompany “noisy” or “dirty” AC or DC power supplies, eliminating potential burnout from incoming voltage that is higher than the lamp’s capacity. Second, the new 3Watt MR16 bulbs eliminate the need to stock a variety of LED MR16 bulbs to coordinate with different voltages that power supplies of 12Volt AC/DC – 24Volt DC may present, simplifying procurement and inventory procedures.
High-powered 3Watt LED MR16
bulbs (Series Number MR16-3W) have the following characteristics; bi-pin bases just
like standard incandescent
MR16 bulbs, and light outputs of 102.9 lumens using only 2.6Watts
with 12Volts DC, 120.6lumens using only 3.7Watts with 12Volts AC,
and 140.7 lumens using only 3.8Watts with 24Volts DC. The bulb features
three High-Power LEDs and is offered in Cool White (6500 Kelvin)
and Warm White (3000 Kelvin) color temperatures. Both Warm and Cool
Whites are offered in 61° beam angles (2 ½). With factory
approval, MR16-3W bulbs may be ordered in other LED colors, voltages
and beam angles.
MR16-3W bulbs carry a three-year limited warranty.
Unlike halogen MR16 lamps that create potentially damaging heat and
have caused fires when accidentally in contact with other objects,
LED-sourced MR16-3W bulbs generate less heat while operating and
pose no threat to the objects they are illuminating or their surroundings.
Lighting professionals, architects, industrial designers and maintenance departments will find these MR16-3W lamps to be excellent solutions for their maintenance-free and low-voltage applications. MR16-3W lamps are commonly used for accent, task, and display lighting, track lighting in museums, jewelry stores, and hotels. They are excellent for both residential lighting situations and entertainment venues like theaters, restaurants, and theme parks.
With an average White LED lifespan of up to 50,000-hours (five years), LEDs operate reliably year after year. Solid-state design renders LEDs impervious to electrical and mechanical shock, vibration, frequent switching and environmental fluctuation. Integrated current-limited resistors prevent short-circuiting. LED lamps use only 10%-20% of the energy consumed by equivalent incandescent lamps. When combined with their maintenance-free operation this results in substantial cost savings.

CARPINTERIA, Calif. — February 26, 2008 — Holland Scott Gallery debuts the Environmentally Responsible Green Energy Fine Art Lamps. These lamps combine energy-efficiency technology with fine-art design.
Elegant photographic floral images and art-deco linoleum patterns from the 1930's are the result of energy efficient LED (Light Emitting Diode) lamp technology and the Giclée (zhee-clay) fine-art printmaking process. The Giclée printmaking process uses permanent archival vegetable die inks on the cylindrical illuminated photographic image. Additional lamp designs are in production.
Omni-directional, these LED lamps provide the correct color temperature of daylight for displaying naturally brilliant photographic colors. They also generate no heat and are free from harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays that may cause fading over time. More importantly, LED lamps use 80 to 90 percent less energy than the incandescent lamps they replace.
Inventor and artist, Candy Hawthorne, along with her husband and art dealer, Scott, also a professional photographer and a true-digital art pioneer, are the brains behind the first Green Energy Fine Art Lamps. They have been creating art mediums with computers and technology since 1978.
Scott is a designer and creative evangelist; his contemporary photographic works are represented in each lamp he designs.
"The natural photographic beauty is complemented with the soft LED lighting; these new lamps look spectacular," Scott said. "The eco-friendliness of the new lamps is also very exciting."
The new long lasting LED lighting is provided by LEDtronics, one of the leading LED lighting design and manufacturing companies in the U.S. of direct incandescent replacement long life and energy saving LED bulbs. The LEDtronics lights that are being using are their TRF-G30-XCW-02 for the larger Art lamps and the TRF-A19-XCW-02 for the smaller Art lamps.

LEDs are emerging as a mainstream tool for architects, interior designers and lighting professionals with the vision to move beyond the limits of incandescent, fluorescent and neon.
LEDTronics pioneered the use of multi-LED arrays on conventional electrical bases. This innovation has opened up a vast spectrum of creative possibilities to any professional dealing with interior or environmental lighting. LED arrays are used as accent lighting in hard-to-reach places where frequent relamping is impractical. With a life span of 100,000 hours (that's more than 10 years), LEDs are far preferable to incandescents in such situations.
SolarLEDs™ provide energy-efficiency vastly greater than conventional lighting, and are ideal for any battery-driven application, or, any time minimal power consumption is required.
StripLights™ and PathLights™ provide directional lighting for steps, stairways and walkways.
Although LEDs can successfully replace incandescent and other forms of illumination in almost all cases, there are some considerations which must be taken into account. Unlike incandescent lamps, LEDs produce light in a single wavelength and a single direction. LEDTronics designs cluster arrays to increase the amount of illumination, or package them as bar graphs or with right angles.
