Strategies Unlimited Reports High-Brightness LED Market Poised for Rapid Growth in 2010 and Beyond

Market Report: September 14, 2009

  • Continuing the trend of recent years, high-brightness LED market growth for 2008 was 11%, reaching $5.1 billion, in spite of a shaky fourth quarter.
  • However, a decline of 3.7% is expected for 2009, resulting in a market size of $4.9 billion.
This decline will not affect all HB LED market segments equally. For example, although some of the more mature markets such as automotive lighting, mobile phones, and outdoor video screens are experiencing substan tial downturns, other emerging segments such as backlights for LCD displays in notebook computers and TVs are showing strong growth.
  • Moreover, the LED lighting market is also continuing to grow, although at a somewhat slower pace than in recent years.

According to market research firm Strategies Unlimited in its recently released report High-Brightness LED Market Review and Forecast - 2009, lighting and LCD backlighting are the applications that will drive market reco very in 2010 and over the next five years, with market growth forecast at a CAGR of 24%, reaching $14.9 billion in 2013.

In all market segments, the penetration rates for the use
of HB LEDs continue to grow.

The fundamental drivers for HB LED adoption have not changed. It is the impact of the worldwide economic recession on end product demand, rather than any slowdown in the rate of HB LED adoption, that is causing the HB LED market to dip in 2009.

As noted above, lighting and LCD backlighting are providing strong counterweights to the decline in other segments, and they have moderated the rate of overall HB LED market contraction.

The new Strategies Unlimited report is the tenth from the company on LED applications and markets. It analyzes the HB LED market in depth, from both the demand side and the supply side, including supplier market shares. Detailed quantitative market analysis is provided, including breakouts by application and product type, in terms of units, ASPs and revenue. Five-year market forecasts are provided for each application and HB LED product type.

High-Brightness LED Market Review and Forecast -- 2009 is available for immediate delivery from Strategies Unlimited for $5,450. More information on the report is available by contacting Tim Carli, Sales Manager, at +1 650 941-3438 ext. 23, or by email at tcarli@strategies-u.com.

Founded in 1979, Strategies Unlimited specializes in market research and strategic consulting directed at the optoelectronics and compound semiconductor industries. It has published reports on LED markets and technology since 1994, and it established the first annual industry conference on HB LEDs, known as Strategies in Light, in 2000. EPD: Environmental Product Declaration overview

An EPD is a standardized (ISO 14025/TR) and LCA based tool to communicate the environmental performance of a product or system, and is applicable worldwide for all interested companies and organizations.

A declaration is based on a Life Cycle Assessment. It includes information about the environmental impacts associated with a product or service, such as raw material acquisition, energy use and efficiency, content of materials and chemical substances, emissions to air, soil and water and waste generation. It also includes product and company information.

Certified EPDs are open for all products and services. There is no evaluation of the environmental information since no predetermined environmental performance levels are set. Instead it builds on well-structured and quantitative data certified by an independent third part

An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) presents quantified environmental data for products or systems based on information from a LCA conducted according to the ISO-standards for LCA. EPD is voluntarily developed information and the purpose is to provide quality-assured and comparable information regarding environmental performance of products.

The information presented in this section is based on the framework developed by the Swedish Environmental Management Council.

This system is the most internationally recognized of its kind. Certified EPDs can be found and downloaded from the web site link above.

Documents for EPD Calculation

Two documents control how the calculations and data collection behind an EPD should be conducted and what information the EPD must contain;

Requirements for the EPD system (MSR) The MSR contains general requirements for all EPDs

Product specific requirements (PSR) The PSR contains more detailed requirements for each product group.

EPDs are:

Objective, due to the requirement that scientifically accepted and valid methods are used for life cycle assessment (LCA)

Non-selective and neutral, due to the absence of valuations and predetermined environmental performance levels that must be met

Flexible, since the contents of an EPD can be amended as necessary and as required by the company/organisation after due external review and verification

Using EPD Certifications

For those using the information, EPDs can be used as a source information for factual-based and comparable environmental information about the environmental performance of products and services along the supply chain and for end-products. Specific attributes of EPDs are:

Comparable, since the information in the declarations is collected and calculated based on common harmonized calculation rules.

Credible, due to the requirements for inspection, review, approval and follow-up by an independent verifier.

Continuously up-dated, through the requirements concerning routines for documentation and follow-up procedures

ISO 14025:2006

ISO 14025:2006 establishes the principles and specifies the procedures for developing Type III environmental declaration programmes and Type III environmental declarations. It specifically establishes the use of the ISO 14040 series of standards in the development of Type III environmental declaration programmes and Type III environmental declarations.

ISO 14025:2006 establishes principles for the use of environmental information, in addition to those given in ISO 14020:2000

Type III environmental declarations as described in ISO 14025:2006 are primarily intended for use in business-to-business communication, but their use in business-to-consumer communication under certain conditions is not precluded.

The EPD certification (Environmental Product Design), which is issued by the Swedish Environmental Management Council, is an environmental labeling system that is based on International Standards Organization (ISO, an organization that sets international standards and the U.S. member body is ANSI).  EPD certification is one of the world's most respected environmental certifications.

The SEMC awarded EPD certification based on an independent 'full life cycle' assessment of LG.Philips LCD's 32, 37, and 42-inch LCD TV panels.

This certification will help LG.Philips LCD meet the increasing consumer demand for in-depth product information, and underscores the company's commitment to environment-friendly products and manufacturing processes. In particular, as the first TFT-LCD (Thin film transistor liquid crystal display) manufacturer to obtain EPD certification, LG.Philips LCD is helping to establish environmental information disclosure standards for the TFT-LCD industry, as a whole.

LG.Philips LCD is currently ahead of government regulations in terms of environmental standards, as all of its TFT-LCD TV panels already conform to RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances)  in July 2006. The company has also ensured that its production processes for other TFT-LCD products, such as PC monitors and notebook PC panels, are ready to meet the rigorous RoHS standards.

As part of its commitment to the environment, LG.Philips LCD has adopted lead-free soldering in the production of all of its LCD TV panels, and is expanding its green house gas treatment system to include all of its production lines in order to reduce emissions of PFCs, one of most hazardous greenhouse gases.

An EPD is defined as "quantified environmental data for a product with pre-set categories of parameters based on the ISO 14040 series of standards, but not excluding additional environmental information". The goal of EPD certification is "to encourage the demand for and supply of those products and services that cause less stress on the environment, thereby stimulating the potential for market driven continuous environmental improvement".

As a result, an EPD is increasingly being seen as an important tool to use when communicating the environmental performance of products in business-to-business transactions. Itcontains information about the company and product, the environmental performance of the product as well as information from the company and certification body.

The incandescent bulb is turning into a case study of the way government mandates can spur innovation.

Despite a decade of campaigns by the government and utilities to persuade people to switch to energy-saving compact fluorescents, incandescent bulbs still occupy an estimated 90 percent of household sockets in the United States. Aside from the aesthetic and practical objections to fluorescents, old-style incandescents have the advantage of being remarkably cheap.

"There's a massive misperception that incandescents are going away quickly," said Chris Calwell, a researcher with Ecos Consulting who studies the bulb market. "There have been more incandescent innovations in the last three years than in the last two decades."

The first bulbs to emerge from this push, Philips Lighting's Halogena Energy Savers, are expensive compared with older incandescents. They sell for $5 apiece and more, compared with as little as $ .25 for standard bulbs.

But they are also 30% more efficient than older bulbs. Philips says that a 70-watt Halogena Energy Saver gives off the same amount of light as a traditional 100-watt bulb and lasts about three times as long, eventually paying for itself.

The line, for now sold exclusively at Home Depot and on Amazon.com, is not as efficient as compact fluorescent light bulbs, which can use 75 percent less energy than old-style bulbs. But the Energy Saver line is finding favor with consumers who dislike the light from fluorescent bulbs or are bothered by such factors as their slow start-up time and mercury content.

"Due to the 2007 federal energy bill that phases out inefficient incandescent light bulbs beginning in 2012, we are finally seeing a race" to develop more efficient ones, said Noah Horowitz, senior scientist with the Natural Resources Defense Council.

Some of the leading work is under way at a company called Deposition Sciences here in Santa Rosa. Its technology is a key component of the new Philips bulb line.

The big three lighting companies -- General Electric, Osram Sylvania and Philips -- are all working on the technology, as is Auer Lighting of Germany and Toshiba of Japan.

A third technology, bulbs using light-emitting diodes, promises remarkable gains in efficiency but is still expensive. Prices can exceed $100 for a single LED bulb, and results from a government testing program indicate such bulbs still have performance problems.

That suggests that LEDs -- though widely used in specialized applications like electronic products and, increasingly, street lights -- may not displace incumbent technologies in the home any time soon.

Gallium nitride (GaN) HEMT transistors by Cree are designed for use in WiMAX applications covering the 4.9 to 5.8GHz frequency band.

The new transistors, CGH55015F and CGH55030F, are the first released GaN HEMT WiMAX products specified to operate at up to 5.8 GHz, a performance level that further demonstrates Cree’s leadership in GaN technology.

Significant potential benefits offered by the new 15-watt and 30-watt devices include:

* A four-fold increase in efficiency compared with similar power level GaAs MESFET devices
* Elevated frequency operation compared with commercially available silicon LDMOS
* Operational capability in the license-exempt 5.8 GHz ISM (industrial, scientific and medical) band as well as 5.3-GHz and 5.47-GHz U-NII (Unlicensed National Information Infrastructure) bands
* Superior linearity of better than 2.5% EVM at average power under a WiMAX signal at 25% drain efficiency covering an instantaneous bandwidth of 5.5 to 5.8 GHz.

Both transistors are available with “reference design” amplifier platforms.

As business and residential customers continue to demand increased capacity and functionality for wireless networks, these transistors can enable efficient power amplifiers in small base-station formats (access points) for last-mile service utilizing WiMAX-based architectures. Such outdoor units can allow Internet service providers to maximize their ROI on spectrum due to the ability to offer tiered services (enabled by improved quality of service and wider channel bandwidths) to hundreds of broadband users from a single access point.

“The CGH55015F and CGH55030F are two great examples of new GaN transistors Cree developed to support the higher operational frequency and stringent efficiency and linearity requirements needed to enable next-generation WiMAX base stations and access points,” said Jim Milligan, Cree’s director of RF and microwave products. “These 5-GHz transistors complement the CGH35060 product that we are also releasing now to round out our 3.5-GHz GaN HEMT WiMAX product line. This 60-watt product is a direct result of customer feedback and offers customers greater flexibility for 3.5-GHz WiMAX applications, particularly in Europe where remote radio heads (RRHs) are increasingly being used.”

JUNE 12, 2008 — Cree, Inc. (Nasdaq: CREE)  introduced the world’s first commercially available GaN monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) amplifiers.

These two “catalog” MMICs integrate Cree’s proven GaN RF transistor technology with a variety of other circuit elements to form fully integrated amplifier circuits. This allows for a dramatic reduction in size and increase in performance over hybrid amplifiers.

Many RF integrated circuits can now be identically replicated on a single silicon carbide (SiC) substrate in a production process similar to that used for commercial microprocessors.

The new broadband power amplifier MMICs, the CMPA0060005 and CMPA2560025, are now available for sample release in packaged and die formats.

The CMPA0060005 is a wideband 5-watt distributed amplifier operating from DC to 6 GHz. The CMPA2560025 is a higher-power, 25-watt reactively matched amplifier operating from 2.5 to 6 GHz. Both MMICs are suitable for a variety of applications where high power over broad bandwidths is required. As an example, a pair of CMPA2560025s driven by a CMPA0060005 can provide over 40 dB gain with an output power up to 50 watts in the 2.5 to 6-GHz band.

Standard Full-Wafer (SFW) MMIC Foundry Service

Cree also announces the expansion of its standard full-wafer (SFW) MMIC Foundry service to include shared multi-project (SMP) “pizza mask” foundry runs on a quarterly basis. This SMP service is available for both SiC MESFET and GaN HEMT MMIC processes.

“The introduction of the industry’s first off-the-shelf ‘catalog’ GaN MMICs continues to set Cree apart as the industry’s leader in wide bandgap MMIC technology,” said Jim Milligan, Cree director of RF and microwave products. “These products can provide our customers with the performance improvement and size-reduction benefits of microwave circuit integration in convenient ‘drop-in’ 50-ohm amplifiers. Further, our new SMP foundry service will be ideal for lower-cost prototyping of SiC or GaN MMICs by allowing customers to purchase a portion of a shared multi-project wafer.”

“This MMIC milestone is the culmination of many years of internal investment and external support from the U.S. Department of Defense, the Title III Office, and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). Kramer Lighting - LEDs Made in USA to ISO90001 Standards

Kramer Lighting has launched KramerLED, utilizing groundbreaking light emitting diode (LED) technology featuring daylight harvesting, dimming capabilities and superior light control.

The patent-pending product line is for commercial indoor lighting.

The keys to a high efficiency LED interior luminaire are thermal management and optical control. With its heat pipe technology and patent-pending offset axial optics, KramerLED delivers superior efficiency, performance, and longevity.

"Energy efficiency is a top priority for the lighting industry," said Kramer Lighting president Al Ruud. "The KramerLED line offers a new 'green' option for facilities working toward Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Certification."

KramerLED uses the new X-Lamp MC-E LED from Cree, Inc., a premier manufacturer of LEDs. The MC-E LED retains the same 7 x 9 mm footprint as the existing XR-E family but with four times the light output. This technology enables new applications, reduces overall system cost, and uses the fewest LEDs within the smallest aperture possible to maximize light output and maintain a 45-degree visual cutoff angle.

KramerLED luminaires provide a significant reduction in energy consumption and overall efficiency with equal or better performance than traditional sources. The line also features proprietary NanoOptic(TM) technology: direct contact refractors sealed to the LED dome. When used in combination with premium optical materials and advanced optical design techniques such as Total Internal Reflection (TIR), NanoOptics provide up to 96 percent optical efficiency.

The concept of TIR occurs when beams of light bounce off a critical angle within the fixture and reflect back to the desired area increasing target zonal efficiency and performance.

One example of this efficiency comes from KramerLED linear products. Per linear foot, linear products deliver 1,000 lumens and consume less than 20 watts with a life rating greater than 50,000 hours. These fixtures also feature dimming through zero to 10-volt control.

Energy efficiency combined with no maintenance costs or lamp replacements present KramerLED fixtures as viable alternatives to other traditional lighting sources. The complete KramerLED series includes downlight, adjustable, wall wash, direct, indirect and pendant luminaires.

Cree Survey Finds Growth of LED Lighting is Escalating

The LED industry is expected to boom on the adoption, deployment and benefits of LED lighting by the end of this year, according to an independent survey conducted at the Hong Kong International Lighting Fair.

The survey, conducted by solid-state lighting components marketer Cree, found that LED lighting will become the most commonly used in offices, parking garages and residential outdoor applications.

The survey confirms a strong global demand increase for LED lighting products. It reveals that, globally, an increased awareness is developing around the benefits of energy-efficient LEDs. According to Cree, this indicates that the adoption trend should continue through to the end of the decade.

The survey found that nearly three-quarters (72%) of the respondents have experienced a growth rate in excess of 20% for LED lighting products in their businesses during the last six months.

Almost two-thirds of the respondents (63%) said that they believed that LED lighting would be accounting for 50% of their sales and installations by 2009.

The respondents expect the LED lighting market to grow within a variety of application areas, with  the highest being:

  • Street and parking at 20%,
  • Indoor residential at 17%,
  • Retail and display at 17% and
  • Office at 15%

Survey respondents represent top decision-makers and lighting manufacturers who attended the 2007 Hong Kong International Lighting Fair, which is the largest lighting show in Asia and the second-largest in the world. Nearly one-half of the survey respondents were from outside Asia, reflecting the survey’s global reach.

“The survey results present us with a clear and positive picture of LED lighting growth patterns and expectations from leaders in fixture design and manufacturing. “The survey also shows an increasing demand for high-quality, energy-efficient LED lighting,” says Cree director of corporate marketing Greg Merritt.

LUXEON power LEDs from Philips Lumileds are poised to rapidly increase their presence in front-of-vehicle applications with expected European Union regulations mandating daytime running lamps (DRLs) on new cars beginning in 2011.

One of the major factors driving LUXEON use will be the dramatic reduction in DRL power consumption (Watts), on the order of 80%, made possible by energy-efficient LED technology.

Audi and VW currently offer LUXEON-based daytime running lights, and several other carmakers are
preparing to release vehicles with LUXEON-based DRLs over 2008-09 as part of a movement to improve road safety by increasing vehicle visibility during daylight hours.

With the new EU regulations in place, slashing DRL power consumption
by 80% or more compared to

incandescent or halogen bulbs
will be the most important factor for LED adoption.

This energy savings is critical because DRLs built with conventional bulbs consume more power than any other exterior lighting application due to their always-on daylight use, potentially running afoul of today’s fuel economy standards.

A typical DRL solution with incandescent or halogen bulbs uses 40-80 Watts of power. LUXEON-based
DRLs consume 10 Watts of power or less because of the technology’s low power demands and energy
efficiency.

Given these benefits, any new regulation requiring DRLs is expected to drive broader LUXEON adoption for
daytime running lamps as well as other forward automotive lighting applications. Already, LUXEON
technology is lighting the world’s first all-LED headlight on the Audi R8 supercar.

“Today LED DRLs are used on fewer than 1% of vehicles, in part because daytime running lamps are not
required in most countries. If the new regulation by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe moves ahead as expected, it will increase that number dramatically because of the low power usage,
longevity and design flexibility of LEDs compared to conventional light sources,” said Scott Kern, Vice
President, Automotive Sales, for Philips Lumileds. “LUXEON LEDs promise to lead the market because of
their reliability, high quality white light, and proven performance in the automotive industry.”

Over the years, Philips Lumileds has pioneered many automotive exterior lighting applications with its
LUXEON, SuperFlux and SnapLED products. In addition to driving the industry’s first all-LED daytime
running lamp and all-LED headlamp, the company’s solid-state lighting technology has enabled the world’s
first all-LED rear combination lamp, first single-LED stop-tail lamp, first LED front-, rear- and side-mirror
turn signals.

In 2007, Philips Lumileds released the LUXEON K2 warm and neutral white LEDs that offer new lighting possibilities

Warm-white and neutral-white LUXEON K2 emitters and a LUXEON K2 Star part  can be specified with any standard white emitter.

The new white colors have typical correlated color temperatures (CCT) of 3000K and 4100K and a color rendering index (CRI) of 80 and 75 respectively. The CCT range for LUXEON K2 now extends from 2670K to 10,000K and a new finer color bin structure allows for better overall selection.

Unlike most power LEDs that are limited to 700mA, LUXEON K2 warm white and neutral white LEDs can be run up to 1500mA and a junction temperature of 150°C. The new warm-white and neutral white can deliver more than 130lm and 140lm respectively. LUXEON K2 delivers more usable light at virtually any drive current and junction temperature condition.

“With the increases in light output performance and efficacy, there is expanding demand for power LEDs that deliver the quality of light required for general lighting applications,” said Steve Landau, Director of Marketing Communications. “Designers of residential applications, such as recessed can lights need uniformity, high color rendering and a warm white color temperature at 3000K. In many retail and commercial applications, a cooler temperature of 4100K is desired. With the new binning and phosphor technologies in LUXEON K2, the needs of lighting designers in both markets can be addressed.”

Lighting designers consider several critical “quality of light” factors when evaluating white LEDs: color temperature (CCT), color rendering (CRI) and color uniformity are three of the most important. The new LUXEON K2 parts address CCT and CRI and Philips Lumileds phosphor expertise and technologies ensure the highest degree of color uniformity resulting in white LEDs that are as much as 7 times more uniform that other white power LEDs.

LUXEON K2 Star, like the configuration already available in other LUXEON product families, consists of a white LUXEON K2 emitter mounted onto a metal core pc board (MCPCB). This configuration allows for rapid prototyping and production in a wide range of applications without the need to create custom level 2 boards. LUXEON Star products have been an industry standard for many years and been the configuration of choice for everything from architectural and entertainment lighting to emergency and portable lighting. Complete product information is available on the company’s website and in the LUXEON K2 datasheet also available online. LUXEON K2 warm-white and neutral-white power LEDs are in-stock and available for immediate delivery from Future Electronics. LUXEON K2 Star is stocked in limited quantities and interested parties should contact Future Electronics with their specific needs.

Understanding Power LED Lifetime Analysis

How intuitive graphical data sets help lighting designers accurately predict power LED reliability in different operating environments.

When designing LED-based lighting systems, engineers need to understand LED lumen maintenance and mortality in similar terms to those used when designing with conventional light sources. However, comparable data has been nearly impossible to find. In addition, designers need extra information to predict the lifetime of LEDs under a variety of operating conditions. A number of techniques to predict LED lifetimes have been proposed, but these have not been sufficient to generate the clear and unambiguous data that lighting engineers can use easily. This white paper provides lighting designers with an understanding of a new tool introduced by Philips Lumileds Lighting Company that simplifies the process allowing full flexibility in design options. This one tool provides designers with information that they need to make decisions about product lifetimes, driver constraints, number of LEDs required, and thermal management.

1. Aging and failure modes of lighting sources
2. Established lighting industry definitions of useful life
3. Established LED industry definitions: Lumen maintenance
4. Understanding LED operation and lifetimes
5. Completing the expression for lumen maintenance
6. Designing with B/L data for optimal lighting performance
7. Predicting LED lifetimes

Conclusion
The lighting industry needs LED manufacturers to provide data that is compatible with current design practice. However, this only answers a part of the challenge. LED vendors should also be in a position to provide more detailed information about product lifetimes under various operating conditions. This data allows lighting designers to deliver the best combination of purchase price, lighting performance, and cost of ownership for the life of the product.

From a user’s perspective, this data is most usefully expressed as a combination of B- and Llifetime as junction temperature and forward current are varied. This allows the system designer to make intelligent choices about the number of LEDs required, how they are driven, and the operating temperature.

Every power LED customer should therefore expect their supplier to provide this data as a matter of course, in any combination of B, L, Tj and If values, with clear definitions of failures (e.g. lumen maintenance below specified condition, electrical failures).

In 2007 Cree and Raleigh, North Carolina, Launch Nation’s First “LED City” with Cost-Saving Municipal Lighting

Raleigh Recognizes Greater than 40 Percent Energy Savings as Municipal Garage Switches to LED Lighting.

Cree, Inc., a U.S.-based leader in LED solid-state lighting components, and the City of Raleigh, North Carolina, the anchor city in a rapidly growing metro area, developed a joint, city-wide initiative to test, deploy and promote LED technology focused on a variety of general lighting applications.

The “LED City” initiative will create a “living laboratory” to deliver the economic, environmental and usage benefits of LED lighting to the urban residents.

The first project is focused on validating both the cost savings and technology capabilities of LEDs through an installation of LED lighting in the City’s Municipal Building parking deck.

Both Cree and Raleigh public officials expect the initiative to serve as a model for other cities that are considering implementing energy-efficient infrastructures.

As part of the commitment to creating an “LED City,” Raleigh plans to deploy LED lighting, through its living-laboratory initiative, to serve a number of lighting applications over the next 18 months including:
  • garage and parking lot lights
  • street lights
  • architectural and accent lighting
  • portable lighting
  • pedestrian and walkway lighting

Cree, the City of Raleigh and Lighting Science Group Corporation (OTCBB: LSGP) of Dallas, TX, also announced initial results of the first installation of the LED City initiative. LED-based lighting fixtures, provided by Lighting Science Group, were installed by Amtech Lighting Services in the Raleigh Municipal Building parking deck in December 2006. Progress Energy, Raleigh’s primary electric utility provider, says the floor equipped with LED lights uses over 40 percent less energy than the standard lighting system. Plus, according to Progress Energy’s research, the quality of light in the garage is greatly improved.

“The economic benefits for municipalities to invest in LEDs are clear – they

  • save energy
  • reduce environmental impact
  • improve the quality of light
As leaders in one of America’s fastest growing cities, it’s our civic responsibility to invest in the future and ensure the highest possible quality of life and safety for our citizens in generations to come,” stated Charles Meeker, Raleigh mayor. “We believe that the cost savings and benefits of LED lighting are real and achievable today.”

“Today’s announcement represents a milestone toward large-scale adoption of clean, energy-efficient technologies,” commented Kateri Callahan, president of the Washington, D.C.-based Alliance to Save Energy (ASE).
“Raleigh’s progressive commitment to becoming the first ‘LED City’ will no doubt serve as a model for other cities seeking to improve energy consumption and reduce negative impacts on the environment. We commend Cree and the City of Raleigh for helping support our mission of achieving a healthier economy, a cleaner environment and greater energy security.”

“The City of Raleigh is willing to set the pace, and we invite other municipalities to join us in developing energy-efficient civic centers,” said Chuck Swoboda, Cree CEO and chairman. “This leading-edge effort establishes an important driver for LED adoption within the United States.”

LED City Initiative Yields Benefits Beyond Energy Efficiency

When Raleigh, N.C., the first LED City, and Cree, Inc. turned on new  LEDs in the municipal parking garage, people’s opinion of the quality of the lighting improved threefold.

Survey Shows Public Feels Safer in City Spaces Lit by LEDs

Raleigh exchanged the previous garage fixtures and their dull orange light for LED fixtures with bright white light, and people felt safer. The number of respondents who perceived the garage as “very safe” increased by 76 percent after the LED fixtures were installed, according to a survey by Mindwave Research of Austin, Texas.

Cree produces LEDs that provide a new source of energy-efficient light that can serve as the foundation for cost-effective lighting solutions. Lighting Science Group Corporation of Dallas, Texas, supplied the LED fixtures installed in the Raleigh garage.

“LED technology provides a clear benefit to municipal infrastructure, as well as to the citizens it serves,” said Charles Meeker, mayor of Raleigh. “This survey shows that LEDs can do more than improve light quality. In addition to the proven environmental and energy efficiency benefits the city has already documented, the survey shows that LEDs’ bright white light can help improve public feelings of safety in city spaces.”

The survey results showed that the parking garage generated a more positive reaction from most of the respondents after the addition of LED fixtures:

  • Both men and women felt significantly safer post-installation: 74 percent rated the garage as feeling “very safe,” while only 2 percent did not feel safe. These figures contrast with the pre-installation numbers: Only 42 percent felt “very safe” with the original lighting, and 13 percent did not feel safe.
  • The percentage of respondents who gave the garage an overall rating of “excellent” increased by 100 percent. The number of people who rated it as “poor” decreased from 8 to 1 percent.
  • The lighting quality of the garage was “excellent” according to 86 percent of the respondents, a 258-percent increase from pre-installation respondents. The number of people who rated it as “poor” decreased from 18 to 2 percent.
  • The cleanliness of the parking garage was perceived as “excellent” by 76 percent of the respondents, while only 58 percent rated it this way before the LEDs were installed, showing a 31-percent increase.

Raleigh agrees to become the nation’s first LED City.

The LED City initiative focuses on installing LED lighting, based on Cree’s energy-efficient LEDs, throughout the city to save energy and money and boost the quality of life for its residents by using the best lighting technology commercially available. As a result, the city has improved the energy savings and lighting of its municipal city parking facility, the first of a series of projects aimed at delivering the environmental and economic benefits of LED lighting throughout Raleigh’s “living laboratory.”

Research Note:
The two surveys of 200 people each were conducted on behalf of Cree, Inc. by Mindwave Research, Inc. The pre-installation survey was conducted November 11-13, 2006, and the post-installation survey was conducted February 5-8, 2007.

It's nice to see the "kid grow up", as my parents used to say.  I moved North Carolina in the late 1980s and was privy to the babysteps of the new regional innovator, Cree.  Simple name, complex technology...for a simple lighting solution.  It's hard to believe Cree is 20 years old...practical an emancipated adult!  And what a wake they have carved in their 20 years of youthful thinking and creative development.

Growing from six founders in 1987 to more than 2,600 employees worldwide today, Cree continues to work with silicon carbide and gallium nitride materials to lead innovation in the LED and lighting industries. Opportunities for Cree and the LED have never been better, driven largely by the world’s rapidly growing demand for energy efficiency and a cleaner environment.

“There is an ever-increasing global recognition that LEDs can be used in many lighting applications in place of today’s common light bulb to help solve the world’s energy and environmental challenges. Cree is in the unique position of being one of the few companies that has the technology to lead the LED lighting revolution, without the baggage of a traditional bulb business to slow us down,” comments Chuck Swoboda, Cree chairman and CEO.

“We have aggressively advanced LED technology for 20 years, with the last two years being particularly exciting, because we have achieved lighting-class performance for use in general illumination,” notes John Edmond, Cree co-founder and director of advanced optoelectronics.

“In the next several years, we can expect LEDs to become an increasingly important source of light in our cities, businesses and homes.”

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, over the next 20 years rapid adoption of LED lighting can potentially reduce the demand for electricity in lighting applications by up to 62 percent. It can also eliminate up to 258 million metric tons of carbon emissions and avoid the need to build 133 new power plants.

Cree’s innovations span a number of markets. In new products, Cree released the first commercially available LEDs that achieve a minimum luminous flux of 100 lumens, and the first warm-white XLamp® LEDs for use in indoor home and office applications. Cree has also actively encouraged cities to adopt energy-efficient LED lighting throughout their infrastructures. The cities of Raleigh, N.C., and Toronto, Canada, seeking to improve energy efficiency of public lighting, have been first to join Cree in the LED City™ program.

“Cree was founded on our conviction that wide-bandgap semiconductors, silicon carbide and gallium nitride, could be superior alternatives to silicon and gallium arsenide for a wide range of devices,” says John Palmour, Cree co-founder and executive vice president for advanced devices. “Our materials and device expertise are the result of intensive research and development for the Department of Defense and Department of Energy programs. Our work has led to commercially available products that today can replace inefficient light bulbs and even significantly reduce the power needs of today’s massive IT server farms.”

“It’s remarkable to see the semiconductor materials company we founded so many years ago evolve in capability to take on two of this generation’s greatest challenges: the world’s demand for energy and the need for products that have less impact on the environment,” comments Calvin Carter, Cree co-founder and director of advanced materials technology. “From LEDs to power and wireless devices, all Cree products can significantly reduce energy use and are environmentally friendly alternatives to less-advanced technologies. We are in a great position from which to continue our growth and industry leadership.”

In September, 2007, Cree announced it achieved R&D results of 129 lumens per watt for a cool-white LED and 99 lumens per watt for a warm-white LED.

These are the best results reported for packaged, high-power LEDs, and indicate that Cree is extending its lead in solid-state lighting through its continued investments in LED technology.

The results have been verified by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). NIST’s tests confirmed that the cool-white (5,813 K) LED produced 135.7 lumens of light output and achieved 129 lumens per watt efficacy. The warm-white (2,950 K) LED produced 104.2 lumens of light output and achieved 99 lumens per watt efficacy. The institute tests LEDs at 350 mA and measures the output after five minutes of operation to ensure thermal stabilization.

In coming years, such investments in core LED technology could lead to products that replace traditional light sources in all commercial applications.

Customers may see these technology advancements in commercial products
within 12 to 24 months.

“To replace traditional light sources, LEDs need to provide both high light output and high efficacy,” comments John Edmond, Cree co-founder and director of advanced optoelectronics. “Cree continues to push the limits of LED performance in order to realize the potential of the LED lighting revolution – energy-efficient, long-lasting LED light.”

IHOP Adopts Cree LED Lighting After Comparing LEDs to CFLs

International House of Pancakes (IHOP) franchise in Northern Virginia, owned and operated by Wilhelm Restaurant Group, Inc., has adopted Cree LED lighting products as the preferred lighting for all existing and future restaurants.

Since testing began in January, 2008:

* More than 100 retrofit LR6 six-inch LED downlights have been installed in two locations,
* Six additional locations have retrofit plans in progress, and
* Construction plans for a new IHOP have been modified to specify Cree LR6 LED downlights.

Paul Belle, vice president Wilhelm Restaurant Group, Inc., wanted to move away from conventional, incandescent lighting toward a more sustainable, energy-efficient light. He was considering compact fluorescent lights (CFLs) but changed his mind after seeing Cree’s LED products.

“Cree’s LED lights were much more impressive than CFLs,” said Belle. “LED light is more energy-efficient, generates less heat, has a longer life, and it’s just a better quality light, in my opinion.”

According to Belle, the IHOP employees prefer the LED lighting as it is very bright, easy on their eyes and enhances the general appearance of the food. “The light is not offensive like CFLs can be; the LEDs give off a warm, white light,” Belle said. “The best way I can describe it is to compare the light to a high-definition television. Everything under the LED lighting appears to have a better clarity, like HDTV versus standard definition.

“It is normal to invest a little more in a new technology, but it’s worth it. Somebody has to be first and I’m glad to be on the cutting edge,” Belle said.

Cree’s LED lighting products use approximately 85 percent less energy and last up to 50 times longer than incandescent lights, and they use 50 percent less energy and last up to five times longer than CFLs. Previously, lighting products in the industry fell short in color quality, efficiency or longevity. Cree has created a dimmable LED lighting solution that leads the industry in a combination of all three critical elements.

LED City Adds China's TEDA to the LED Community Initiative

The Tianjin Economic Development Area (TEDA) in China has joined the LED City™ program. The LED City program is an international initiative to promote and deploy energy-efficient LED (light-emitting diode) lighting. TEDA is the first city area in China to join a rapidly growing consortium of cities in evaluating and deploying LED lighting technology across their municipal infrastructures.

Student Led LED Project!

TEDA partnered with Tianjin Polytechnic University in a large, student-produced LED street lighting project. Twenty graduate students directed by Professor Pingjuan Niu, Ph.D., designed, produced and installed approximately 1,500 LED streetlights. These  LED fixtures  illuminate 15 kilometers along the university’s streets.

“LED lighting not only reduces significantly the amount of energy we use for illumination, it also does not contain toxic materials such as mercury or lead. In addition to the energy and cost benefits, TEDA and the Tianjin Polytechnic University support the development and manufacturing of high-quality LED fixtures in our region for even greater economic benefit,” noted Ai Yaming, TEDA vice chairman.

“LED technology is the most important new development for energy and cost savings in the lighting industry. Our university, its students and TEDA are developing expertise in making the best quality LED lighting with the intent to help accelerate the adoption of LED lighting in China and to increase the economic opportunity for our region,”  said Niu, professor of the solid-state lighting R&D center at Tianjin Polytechnic University.

“The LED street lighting project at Tianjin Polytechnic University is impressive in scale and in the level of quality achieved by Dr. Niu and her students. We encourage other Chinese cities and universities to join with these innovators to help us work to significantly reduce the amount of energy used for lighting throughout the world and to accelerate the adoption of this new technology through innovative design and manufacturing here in China,” noted Chris James, Cree vice president of marketing.

About LED City
The LED City is an expanding community of government and industry parties working to evaluate deploy and promote LED lighting technology across the full range of municipal infrastructure to:
