D.Light, a startup officially announced its products in June 2008.

The company is in the process of moving its offices to Shenzhen, China, from Mountain View, Calif., to manufacture three LED and solar-based lighting products that cost just $10 to $30 and are meant to replace kerosene lanterns.

The Nova will sell for approximately $12 to $25 and one hour of solar charge can provide one hour of LED light on the medium setting.

In many regions of India and Africa that are not connected to the electric power grid, kerosene lanterns provide much of the lighting. But kerosene lanterns can be unsafe and cause respiratory problems; they’re also generally pretty dim and are a contributor to greenhouse gas emissions.

D.Light President Ned Tozun tells us that, while no one would argue replacing kerosene lanterns is a bad idea, technologies such as LEDs and solar panels have just started to become cost-effective replacements.

D.Light was founded by Tozun and his business partners at Stanford with  backing from Draper Fisher Jurvetson, Garage Technology Ventures, Mahindra & Mahindra, Nexus India Capital, Acumen Fund, Gray Matters Capital and Michael Marks (the Chairman of Flextronics). D.Light is working with Seoul Semiconductor for its LEDs and plans to produce in “the millions of units” and strongly focused on getting its goods to the developing world first.

Green Globes is an online building and management environmental audit.

Green Globes helps property owners and architects design a building that will be energy and resource efficient, will achieve operational savings and be healthier to work or live in.

It helps property owners and managers measure the environmental performance of their buildings against best practices in areas such as energy, water, hazardous materials, waste management and indoor environment. Using a confidential questionnaire, it generates an online report. Green Globes is only applicable to existing buildings.

Property owners can use the Green Globes Design tool as either a guide for integrating green design principles into their facilities, or as an assessment protocol. Using confidential questionnaires for each stage of project delivery, the program generates comprehensive on-line assessment and guidance reports.

The US Environmental Protection Agency developed ENERGY STAR Buildings to help businesses reduce pollution associated with building construction and operation, while enhancing their financial value.

Focusing on energy performance and indoor environmental quality components of a building, this initiative can stand alone or be incorporated into other green buildings guidelines.

ENERGY STAR Buildings targets all types of new and existing commercial buildings typically larger than 5,000 square feet, and compares energy performance to the performance of other similar buildings, rather than to code.

A building with an energy performance score of 75 or higher (on a scale of 1-100), using the ENERGY STAR Buildings Benchmarking Tool is awarded the ENERGY STAR label.

A new version of Cree's LR6 dowlight, designed for 220V to 240V electrical systems, has been released to address Europe, Asia, and other major markets.

LR6 Delivers Energy-Efficient and Environmentally Safe Lighting

The LR6-230V is based on Cree’s lighting-class XLamp® LEDs and patented color-mixing technology. This combination allows the LR6-230V to excel in three critical elements – color quality (CRI Ra 94), efficiency and longevity – delivering unprecedented LED lighting performance.

“The high quality of light and the energy efficiency of LEDs enable our fixtures to deliver unprecedented value,” said Neal Hunter, president of Cree LLS.

The LR6 earned recognition as the grand prize winner in a 2007 competition sponsored by the American Lighting Association with performance verified by tests in independent labs under the direction of the U.S. Department of Energy. The assessment praised the LR6 with “high marks for light output and color quality with luminaire efficacy exceeding even the most efficient fluorescent downlights currently available.”

The LR6-230V uses 12 watts of electricity and produces light comparable to a 75-watt incandescent. It uses approximately 85 percent less energy and lasts up to 50 times longer; more than 20 years in homes and 10 years in businesses under normal use conditions. Compared to compact fluorescent (CFL), Cree’s LED lights use 50 percent less energy and last up to five times longer.

With Cree LED lighting solutions, home and business owners worldwide have an energy-efficient lighting alternative superior to conventional lighting and CFLs and free from the environmental risks from mercury in CFLs.

Cree LED Bulb Matches Output of Incandescent Bulb

|
In September 2007, Cree Inc, announced it had demonstrated light output of more than 1,000 lumens – an amount equivalent to the output level of a standard household light bulb – from a single R&D LED.

Cree’s achievement demonstrates continued leadership in the development of LEDs that can make traditional light bulbs obsolete.

A single-die LED, driven at four amps, produced 1,050 lumens in cool white and 760 lumens in a warm-white version. Efficacy of the cool-white LED was 72 lumens per watt and 52 lumens per watt from the warm-white device. Both LED versions operated at substantially higher efficacy levels than those of today’s conventional light bulbs. Historically, Cree’s R&D demonstrations generally have been commercialized within 12 to 24 months.

“Cree’s XLamp® LEDs are the best-performing commercially available LEDs, but we won’t be satisfied until light bulbs are obsolete,” comments John Edmond, Cree co-founder and director of advanced optoelectronics. “We’ve worked 20 years to achieve lighting-class LED performance, and we still have plenty of ways to advance the technology further.”
