TORRANCE, CA --   Energy-efficient T8/bi-pin LED lighting tubes are the latest fluorescent-replacement LED lighting products LEDtronics announces adds to its green-technology lineup.

LEDtronics
® series LED48T8-288-001W bi-pin LED fits into standard G13 bases and is designed to directly replace conventional T8 fluorescent tubes that provide general lighting for commercial, residential and architectural lighting applications. The 48" long white tubes provide the equivalent light output of 24 to 32-watt fluorescent lamps while consuming less than a maximum of 19 watts. In addition, the LED48T8 tubes run on a wide voltage range of 100 to 290 volts AC.

When it comes to rated life, the LEDtronics series LED48T8 really shines.

50,000 hours and more!

While conventional fluorescent lamps typically have a rated life in the range 8,000 to 24,000 hours, the LED48T8 lamps boast an operating life of 50,000 hours and more -- 5.7 years of continuous light. Furthermore, since the LED lights produce so little wasted heat, the temperature inside the fixture does not build up as it does with conventional fluorescent tubes.

The sturdy construction of a UV-resistant polycarbonate housing over the LED tube provides increased protection (no glass to break) and shielding against many environmental effects, allowing them to be placed in locations where typical lights would be more vulnerable to the elements.

Hot and Cold Temperature Applications

LEDs perform well in temperatures from -35C° to +45C°, making them ideal for applications subject to frequent on-off cycling, such as garages and basements, while the aluminum back cover helps with better heat dissipation and a longer lifetime for the LEDs.

The LEDtronics LED48T8 lights deliver up to 1,342 lumens at a color temperature of 5000K (pure daylight white) and 1,072 lumens at a color temperature of 3000K (warm white), compared to the average 810 lumens for equivalent conventional fluorescent tubes. They provide a brightness of up to 429 maximum foot candela across a 114-degree beam pattern, with an impressive CRI of 80.

Other benefits of LEDs over fluorescents include: Quick and easy installation to minimize retrofit costs; no ballast and starter needed, thus no radio frequency to interfere with radio and television signals; instant, full-strength lightup; no buzzing or flickering; and directional distribution of light--good for interior task lighting.

Solid-state design renders LEDs impervious to shock, vibration, frequent switching and environmental extremes. Savings from reduced maintenance costs and downtime quickly return the capital investment expenditure, making them as friendly to the environment as they are to the operating budget. The positive environmental impacts of LED lights additionally come from the consistent, reduced power consumption, long service life, high-quality light, and cold temperature operation, with the corresponding reduction in greenhouse gases and the reduced waste from fewer replacements. Unlike conventional fluorescent bulbs, LED lights are not disposed of as hazardous waste at end of life.

The LEDtronics LED48T8 tubes comply with RoHS--the lead-free and mercury-free directive, as well as the CE safety assurance. They emit no infrared or ultraviolet radiation, and effectively reduce light pollution, being compatible with the international "dark skies" initiative.

The LED48T8-288-001W Premium 4-ft (1200mm) Tube Lights come in two colors: Warm White (SIW) and Pure Daylight White (TPW). Other viewing angles, tube lengths and a variety of LED colors are available for OEM customers. Large-quantity discounts are available for qualified distributors. Availability is stock to 6 weeks.

Five Year Market Advantage Will Be LED Opportunity

Market conditions are right for the LED replacement lamp market to accelerate in the next few years, according to a new market report by Strategies Unlimited, the leading firm covering the LED market.

LED Market Advantages: quality of light, dimmability, controllability, lamp life and environmental cost of ownership.

Dramatic improvements in commercially available LED performance in recent years, as well as significant cost reduction, has made it feasible to design LED lamps to offer comparable lumen output and to compete with other established lighting technologies on the basis of cost of ownership.

The market is in a state of flux as utilities, energy efficiency organizations and customers look for optimum solutions which save energy, minimize the cost of ownership, and give acceptable quality of light.

Customer Education

Customers are in the process of being educated about comparing cost of ownership rather than the initial price of lamps.

Regulations Drive European Market

Regulations in Europe will ban the 100W incandescent clear glass lamp starting in September 2009, and will progressively ban all inefficient incandescent lamps by 2012 and all incandescent lamps by 2016. The Energy Information and Security Act of 2007 began the process of restricting the sale of inefficient lamps in the US.

Market Opportunities for LED Replacement Lamps

By 2012, with a few exceptions, inefficient incandescent lamps cannot be sold. Although the awareness of these regulations is still weak in the marketplace, they will create market opportunities for LED replacement lamps.

Recognizing the potential of LED technology to save energy, policy makers have been supporting the research and development of LED technology and helping its commercialization.

In the short run, while LED replacement lamps become a viable alternative, regulators are encouraging compac t fluorescent lamps (CFLs).

However, over the next five years the advantages of LED technology over CFL will become recognized, especially with respect to the quality of light, dimmability, controllability, lamp life and environmental cost of ownership.

  • Some well-designed LED lamps already offer effective lumen efficacies that compete with CFLs.
  • The commercial and industrial segments will embrace LEDs to control costs and save energy.
  • The LED lamps will be used for directed light applications, in hard-to-reach places and where the cost of re placement is very high.

Replacement Lamp Market Growth Projected at 107%

Although the market for LED replacement lamps is still in its early stages of development, the lamp revenues are forecast to grow at a CAGR of 107% through 2013.

Strategies Unlimited explores the market potential for LED lighting technology in its latest report titled LED Replacement Lamps--Market Analysis and Forecast, 2009. The report analyzes five LED-based lamp types that are designed to replace lamps that currently populate billions of sockets:

  • A-lamp and globes;
  • PAR and R lamps;
  • MR 16's;
  • candelabra and decorative lamps;
  • linear fluore scent tubes.

The markets for five categories of replacement lamps are analyzed for market drivers and challenges, trends, units and revenues for 2008. The report also offers a five-year forecast for 2009-2013.

LED Replacement Lamps--Market Analysis and Forecast, 2009 is available from Strategies Unlimited at a price of $1,895. D.Light, a startup officially announced its products in June 2008.

The company is in the process of moving its offices to Shenzhen, China, from Mountain View, Calif., to manufacture three LED and solar-based lighting products that cost just $10 to $30 and are meant to replace kerosene lanterns.

The Nova will sell for approximately $12 to $25 and one hour of solar charge can provide one hour of LED light on the medium setting.

In many regions of India and Africa that are not connected to the electric power grid, kerosene lanterns provide much of the lighting. But kerosene lanterns can be unsafe and cause respiratory problems; they’re also generally pretty dim and are a contributor to greenhouse gas emissions.

D.Light President Ned Tozun tells us that, while no one would argue replacing kerosene lanterns is a bad idea, technologies such as LEDs and solar panels have just started to become cost-effective replacements.

D.Light was founded by Tozun and his business partners at Stanford with  backing from Draper Fisher Jurvetson, Garage Technology Ventures, Mahindra & Mahindra, Nexus India Capital, Acumen Fund, Gray Matters Capital and Michael Marks (the Chairman of Flextronics). D.Light is working with Seoul Semiconductor for its LEDs and plans to produce in “the millions of units” and strongly focused on getting its goods to the developing world first.

Cree LED Bulb Matches Output of Incandescent Bulb

In September 2007, Cree Inc, announced it had demonstrated light output of more than 1,000 lumens – an amount equivalent to the output level of a standard household light bulb – from a single R&D LED.

Cree’s achievement demonstrates continued leadership in the development of LEDs that can make traditional light bulbs obsolete.

A single-die LED, driven at four amps, produced 1,050 lumens in cool white and 760 lumens in a warm-white version. Efficacy of the cool-white LED was 72 lumens per watt and 52 lumens per watt from the warm-white device. Both LED versions operated at substantially higher efficacy levels than those of today’s conventional light bulbs. Historically, Cree’s R&D demonstrations generally have been commercialized within 12 to 24 months.

“Cree’s XLamp® LEDs are the best-performing commercially available LEDs, but we won’t be satisfied until light bulbs are obsolete,” comments John Edmond, Cree co-founder and director of advanced optoelectronics. “We’ve worked 20 years to achieve lighting-class LED performance, and we still have plenty of ways to advance the technology further.”

Additionally, LED cluster lamps continue to provide light even if one or more emitters fail-unlike when the filament breaks inside incandescent bulbs. LEDtronics' PAR20 LED bulbs are designed to perform well in systems subjected to voltage dips or surges. Integrated current-limited resistors ensure that no circuit modifications are required.

Colored lenses or filters are not needed since LEDs emit colored light that is determined by the composition of the semiconductor material comprising the diode. Intensity and color remain stable over the lamp's lifetime.

LED technology is an energy-efficient directional light source; saving 80% - 90% of energy costs compared to a 30- or 50-Watt incandescent PAR20 lamps. Because LEDs use very little energy, produce little-to-no heat, and are virtually maintenance free the cost savings are substantial.

Solid-state design renders LEDs impervious to electrical and mechanical shock, vibration, frequent switching, and environmental extremes. With an average lifespan of up to 100,000-plus hours (11 years)-up to 50,000 hours for white LEDs-LED bulbs operate reliably year after year. PAR20 LED bulbs are the ideal solution for decorative task lighting and nighttime applications including tracklight fixtures, reading lights, and small ceiling cans. Other applications include large message panels, billboards, scoreboards, time-and-temperature signs, arcade machines, casino accent illumination, and lighting for stages, theaters, carnivals, theme parks and amusement parks. PAR20 LED bulbs can be used as individual pixels in large dot-matrix screens, digital time/temperature signs or full-color display screens.

LEDtronics Drop-in Replacement LED Bulbs for MR16

 R30 LED Spotlight Lamps from LEDtronics

November, 2007 — LEDtronics introduces an addition to its line of drop-in replacement MR16-styled LED bulbs: High-powered 3Watt LED MR16 bulbs.

These new 3Watt MR16 LED bulbs have two big advantages over other MR16 LED bulbs.

First, they are engineered to handle the variations in voltages that may accompany “noisy” or “dirty” AC or DC power supplies, eliminating potential burnout from incoming voltage that is higher than the lamp’s capacity. Second, the new 3Watt MR16 bulbs eliminate the need to stock a variety of LED MR16 bulbs to coordinate with different voltages that power supplies of 12Volt AC/DC – 24Volt DC may present, simplifying procurement and inventory procedures.

High-powered 3Watt LED MR16 bulbs (Series Number MR16-3W) have the following characteristics; bi-pin bases just like standard incandescent MR16 bulbs, and light outputs of 102.9 lumens using only 2.6Watts with 12Volts DC, 120.6lumens using only 3.7Watts with 12Volts AC, and 140.7 lumens using only 3.8Watts with 24Volts DC. The bulb features three High-Power LEDs and is offered in Cool White (6500 Kelvin) and Warm White (3000 Kelvin) color temperatures. Both Warm and Cool Whites are offered in 61° beam angles (2 ½). With factory approval, MR16-3W bulbs may be ordered in other LED colors, voltages and beam angles.

MR16-3W bulbs carry a three-year limited warranty.

Unlike halogen MR16 lamps that create potentially damaging heat and have caused fires when accidentally in contact with other objects, LED-sourced MR16-3W bulbs generate less heat while operating and pose no threat to the objects they are illuminating or their surroundings.

Lighting professionals, architects, industrial designers and maintenance departments will find these MR16-3W lamps to be excellent solutions for their maintenance-free and low-voltage applications. MR16-3W lamps are commonly used for accent, task, and display lighting, track lighting in museums, jewelry stores, and hotels. They are excellent for both residential lighting situations and entertainment venues like theaters, restaurants, and theme parks.

With an average White LED lifespan of up to 50,000-hours (five years), LEDs operate reliably year after year. Solid-state design renders LEDs impervious to electrical and mechanical shock, vibration, frequent switching and environmental fluctuation. Integrated current-limited resistors prevent short-circuiting. LED lamps use only 10%-20% of the energy consumed by equivalent incandescent lamps. When combined with their maintenance-free operation this results in substantial cost savings.

Commercial Real Estate Applications for LED Savings

Energy use is the single largest operating expense in commercial office buildings, representing approximately one-third of typical operating budgets and accounting for almost 20 percent of the nation’s annual greenhouse gas emissions.

In a 200,000-square foot office building that pays $2 per square foot in energy costs, a 10 percent reduction in energy consumption can translate into an additional $120,000 of NOI. At a cap rate of 8 percent, this could mean a potential asset value boost of $500,000!

Commercial real estate applications for energy strategy includes  any multi-family residential, office, industrial, or retail property that can be bought or sold in a real estate market.

Office buildings waste up to one-third of the energy they consume.
