WILA Lighting Releases 621 Recessed LED Downlight

621 Recessed LED Downlight is being released by WILA Lighting to produce industry-leading color consistency.

The 22-watt, 1000 source Lumen luminaire has been engineered for specification grade applications where color consistency from fixture to fixture is demanded. The WILA LED Downlight achieves this with patented Cold Remote Phosphor technology developed by Xicato (R), Inc.

In an effort to comply with DOE codes and LEED standards set by the USGBC, WILA Lighting has solved the problem specifiers, architects and engineers have encountered for years with offering an energy-efficient luminaire with a maximum of + or - 50 Kelvin color temperature variance between fixtures.

While industry-standard LED binning structures allow for color points in a 7 step MacAdam Ellipse, WILA LED Downlights perform to less than a 2 step that is centered on the Black Body Locus at each CCT on the CIE1931 graph. This provides for a perfectly natural light appearance. WILA Lighting also offers a high CRI option with an impressive 95+ CRI. The 621 holds a UL damp listing and complies with LM79 testing standards and is currently undergoing LM80 testing.

WILA Lighting 621 Recessed LED Downlight is offered in 4" or 6" aperture. Multiple reflector beams, finishes and 16 different LiteOptic options allow for creative lighting design solutions.

Five Year Market Advantage Will Be LED Opportunity

Market conditions are right for the LED replacement lamp market to accelerate in the next few years, according to a new market report by Strategies Unlimited, the leading firm covering the LED market.

LED Market Advantages: quality of light, dimmability, controllability, lamp life and environmental cost of ownership.

Dramatic improvements in commercially available LED performance in recent years, as well as significant cost reduction, has made it feasible to design LED lamps to offer comparable lumen output and to compete with other established lighting technologies on the basis of cost of ownership.

The market is in a state of flux as utilities, energy efficiency organizations and customers look for optimum solutions which save energy, minimize the cost of ownership, and give acceptable quality of light.

Customer Education

Customers are in the process of being educated about comparing cost of ownership rather than the initial price of lamps.

Regulations Drive European Market

Regulations in Europe will ban the 100W incandescent clear glass lamp starting in September 2009, and will progressively ban all inefficient incandescent lamps by 2012 and all incandescent lamps by 2016. The Energy Information and Security Act of 2007 began the process of restricting the sale of inefficient lamps in the US.

Market Opportunities for LED Replacement Lamps

By 2012, with a few exceptions, inefficient incandescent lamps cannot be sold. Although the awareness of these regulations is still weak in the marketplace, they will create market opportunities for LED replacement lamps.

Recognizing the potential of LED technology to save energy, policy makers have been supporting the research and development of LED technology and helping its commercialization.

In the short run, while LED replacement lamps become a viable alternative, regulators are encouraging compac t fluorescent lamps (CFLs).

However, over the next five years the advantages of LED technology over CFL will become recognized, especially with respect to the quality of light, dimmability, controllability, lamp life and environmental cost of ownership.

  • Some well-designed LED lamps already offer effective lumen efficacies that compete with CFLs.
  • The commercial and industrial segments will embrace LEDs to control costs and save energy.
  • The LED lamps will be used for directed light applications, in hard-to-reach places and where the cost of re placement is very high.

Replacement Lamp Market Growth Projected at 107%

Although the market for LED replacement lamps is still in its early stages of development, the lamp revenues are forecast to grow at a CAGR of 107% through 2013.

Strategies Unlimited explores the market potential for LED lighting technology in its latest report titled LED Replacement Lamps--Market Analysis and Forecast, 2009. The report analyzes five LED-based lamp types that are designed to replace lamps that currently populate billions of sockets:

  • A-lamp and globes;
  • PAR and R lamps;
  • MR 16's;
  • candelabra and decorative lamps;
  • linear fluore scent tubes.

The markets for five categories of replacement lamps are analyzed for market drivers and challenges, trends, units and revenues for 2008. The report also offers a five-year forecast for 2009-2013.

LED Replacement Lamps--Market Analysis and Forecast, 2009 is available from Strategies Unlimited at a price of $1,895. The City of Chicago and U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) Chicago Chapter selected Derry Berrigan Lighting Design (DBLD), for its LEED Platinum expansion of the Chicago Center for Green Technology (CCGT), the Greenbuild Chicago 2007 Legacy Project.

DBLD achieved 45% below ASHRAE 2004 standards exceeding LEED Platinum requirements by 10% without any aesthetic or lighting quality compromises using daylighting and light emitting diode (LED) lighting sources.
City of Chicago's Center for Green Technology

This accomplishment is a major advancement for sustainable lighting design. Jeff Beaver, Project Manager, DBLD, said "We are proud to be a part of this expansion project. The City of Chicago's Center for Green Technology is a place for learning by demonstration, every community should have one. The Center's educational outreach to more than 20,000 visitors a year will raise awareness of and support for sustainable lighting design and the viability of LED lighting for general illumination. This project has set a high benchmark and proven that LED lighting sources must become the new standard."

Derry Berrigan, DBLD's principal lighting designer, stated, "The three pillars of sustainability -- people, prosperity, and the planet must be considered equally while designing. We have the responsibility as lighting designers to not only deliver aesthetically pleasing visual environments while meeting the task requirements of the occupants, but also consider the total environmental and economic impact of our designs. We have the techniques and tools to deliver sustainable lighting now, and we owe it to our clients and our futures to do it."

Lighting Tops a Building's Electricity Consumption

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, lighting accounts for approximately 30% of a building's electricity consumption, its largest single demand. The cost to the environment is enormous.
Lighting is responsible for approximately
130 million tons of carbon dioxide annually,
about 7% of all carbon emissions.

The Chicago Center for Green Technology's first phase of expansion

  • utilizes high-performance LED technology (90% of all lighting fixtures in the Center are LED),
  • all occupants have access to outdoor views and daylight,
  • leading-edge Lutron lighting controls provide additional opportunities in minimizing energy usage, up to 50%.

These strategies will allow the Center to reduce its energy consumption and environmental impact, and save money on electricity and maintenance costs.

CREE introduces the LRP-38 LED lamp that provides a tightly-focused beam, exceptional color quality, extended life and unmatched energy-efficiency.

Designed for display and retail installations, the Cree LRP-38 is a narrow beam spotlight for use in supermarket produce displays, department stores, and museums--especially where exceptional color quality is valued. The lamp is currently being evaluated in grocery, department and furniture stores, as well as in big box retailers, where it replaced halogen and ceramic metal halide bulbs.

"The technology in Cree's LRP-38 LED lamp is by far the most promising that I have seen yet. I am pleased to see that Cree has definitely raised the bar for serious LED lamp solutions," said Brandon Melton, Corporate Purchasing Manager at Chipotle Restaurants.

The Cree LRP-38 uses Cree TrueWhite(TM) technology to generate a CRI of 92 at a color temperature of 2700K. The tightly-focused beam delivers a center beam candlepower of 4000 with a beam angle of 20 degrees. This UL-listed light is designed to replace 50W - 90W halogen PAR38 bulbs, in various applications. The input power is only 12 Watts, resulting in a total delivered minimum efficacy of 42 lumens per Watt. The lamp is designed to last 50,000 hours in open track fixtures or 35,000 in non-IC commercial recessed downlights.

The lamp has a unique optical design that maximizes the amount of light within the beam while minimizing the source brightness- so the eye is focused on the merchandise, not the light source.

With this product Cree extends the quality and performance of their award-winning LED lights into beam-controlled retrofit lamps. Neal Hunter, Cree LED Lighting president claims that "LEDs contain no harmful mercury and because they don't emit large amounts of heat, UV or infrared light, they protect what they are illuminating--everything from priceless art to fresh tomatoes. Lighting customers should sacrifice nothing in the pursuit of beautiful, energy-efficient light, and with the LRP-38, they don't have to."

The Cree LRP-38 will be sold through Cree LED Lighting sales channels and is currently shipping in volume, with high preliminary demand.

LR6 Delivers Energy-Efficient and Environmentally Safe Lighting

The LR6-230V is based on Cree’s lighting-class XLamp® LEDs and patented color-mixing technology. This combination allows the LR6-230V to excel in three critical elements – color quality (CRI Ra 94), efficiency and longevity – delivering unprecedented LED lighting performance.

“The high quality of light and the energy efficiency of LEDs enable our fixtures to deliver unprecedented value,” said Neal Hunter, president of Cree LLS.

The LR6 earned recognition as the grand prize winner in a 2007 competition sponsored by the American Lighting Association with performance verified by tests in independent labs under the direction of the U.S. Department of Energy. The assessment praised the LR6 with “high marks for light output and color quality with luminaire efficacy exceeding even the most efficient fluorescent downlights currently available.”

The LR6-230V uses 12 watts of electricity and produces light comparable to a 75-watt incandescent. It uses approximately 85 percent less energy and lasts up to 50 times longer; more than 20 years in homes and 10 years in businesses under normal use conditions. Compared to compact fluorescent (CFL), Cree’s LED lights use 50 percent less energy and last up to five times longer.

With Cree LED lighting solutions, home and business owners worldwide have an energy-efficient lighting alternative superior to conventional lighting and CFLs and free from the environmental risks from mercury in CFLs.
