Times Square New Year's Eve Ball is Made with LEDs!

Lighting Science Group Corporation (LSG),   has designed, developed and produced an integrated lighting system for the 2009 Time Square New Year's Eve Ball. The Ball, which boasts a system comprised of 672 LED modules, will be installed on November 26, 2008 in Times Square, New York, where it will continue to remain year round.

The new Times Square Ball is double the diameter of previous Ball and is over 12 feet wide and weighs 11,875 pounds. The Ball uses 32,256 Philips Luxeon Rebel LEDs, which is more than triple the number of LEDs used when compared to the 2008 Ball. The four LED colors, red, green, blue and white, will produce a rich color palette, resulting in 4.3 billion possible color combinations.

This year's Ball is approximately three times brighter and 20% more energy efficient than last year's already energy-efficient Ball. Lighting Science designed and developed the overall lighting system for the Ball, including the LED modules, power systems, and power and data distribution networks. In addition, LSG created custom optical reflectors which extract maximum light output, and an integrated thermal management system that optimizes the balance between brightness and lifetime.

Miniature LED Lantern

Lantern - Miniature LED
This mighty, little lantern is one of the finest LED lighting tools for personal security.

A special conical mirror reflects the super bright LED bulb. Works perfectly as a super compact emergency light, too. Despite its tiny size, it's one of the brightest single bulb lights the Green Home Environmental Store ever tested.

Just twist the body to turn it on.

Expect 25 hours of light, or over 50 hours in flashing mode. Water-resistant design. Use the included hook or carabiner to attach it to your keys, tent, belt loop, or gear. Plastic. Two lithium batteries included.

THE EDGE Family of Products

BetaLED Family of Products
LED lighting for general commercial and industrial applications:

  • Efficiency
  • Performance
  • Longevity
  • Style

THE EDGE features LEDs with a color temperature of 6000K and outputs of 80 lumens per watt - - two factors that make THE EDGE a viable option to replace high-intensity discharge (HID) sources.

SciWorks has new exhibit space focusing on the cranks, levers and lasers that are behind the basic science of physics.

In the new PhysicsWorks, displays are grouped by concept into mechanics, light and color, electricity, motion and perception.

The beginning of the exhibit starts with simple displays of levers, gears and pulleys, then moves on to flashier kiosks for electricity and lasers.  Sanford explains, "Not everybody is going to be a scientist, but everybody is going to have to deal with it at some point."

They include a room that captures a photo of your shadow on photosensitive material with an LED flashing light and a game that shows off the focused intensity of lasers.

There are also displays that are more like low-impact rides, such as a kid-size gyroscope, where you sit on a bicycle seat, and holding a spinning wheel by its axle, you turn around. That's the same concept used in the space and air industry to keep shuttles and planes straight, Sanford said.

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy in India cites the following applications of LEDs:

Light emitting diodes (LED) has number of applications. They include devices, medical appliances, indicators and signs, emergency vehicles, flash lights etc.

Devices, medical applications, clothing, toys

• Remote controls, such as for TVs and VCRs, often use infrared LEDs.

• Glowlights, as a more expensive but longer lasting and reusable alternative to Glowsticks.

• Movement sensors, for example in optical computer mice

• The Nintendo Wii's sensor bar uses infrared LEDs.

In optical fiber and Free Space Optics communications.

Toys and recreational sporting goods, such as the Flashflight

Lumalive, a photonic textile

In pulse oximeters for measuring oxygen saturation

LED phototherapy for acne using blue or red LEDs has been proven to significantly reduce acne over a three-month period.

Some flatbed scanners use an array of red, green, and blue LEDs rather than the typical cold-cathode fluorescent lamp as the light source. Having independent control of three illuminated colors allows the scanner to calibrate itself for more accurate color balance, and there is no need for warm-up.

Computers, for hard drive activity and power on. Some custom computers feature LED accent lighting to draw attention to a given component. Many computer manufacturers use LEDs to tell the user its current state. One example would be the Mac, which tells its user when it is asleep by fading the LED activity lights in and out, in and out.

Sterilization of water and other substances using UV light.
