Dragon-shaped water fountains in Olympic Park brightened by OSRAM Golden DRAGON LEDs
OSRAM Opto Semiconductors and Tong Fang joined hands to illuminate the elegant dragon-shaped water fountains in Beijing’s Olympic Park with OSRAM Golden DRAGON LEDs.
Tong Fang Co. Ltd. installed its dragon-shaped water fountains,
located along the northeast side of the Bird’s Nest and the Water Cube
in the Olympic Park, in July of this year.
The fountains were outfitted
with OSRAM Golden DRAGON with lens and enhanced Thinfilm LED
components, providing the “Dragon” with its characteristic golden glow.
The partnership marks OSRAM’s continued efforts to be the leader and top innovator in China’s LED market, as well as to provide support for China as it prepares to host the largest sporting event in the world.
Two impressive dragons team up
Tong Fang turned to OSRAM Opto Semiconductors for its leading-edge LED
technology, but the partnership may have a deeper, if coincidental,
Chinese connection as well: two dragons, OSRAM's Golden DRAGON LED
lamps and Tong Fang's “dragon fountain”, working together to show
strong support for Beijing’s Olympic Games.
Projects like the dragon-shaped fountains reflect the expanding
opportunities customers find to create interesting and original LED
solid-state lighting applications.
More than 600 meters long, the
“Dragon” is formed by thousands of tiny water jets arranged in a long,
gentle curve cutting through the Olympic Park, comprising a river
stretching two kilometers long. The dynamic jets launch water columns
as high as six meters, creating a kind of rolling wave, like the body
of a dragon as it glides through the air. At the base of each column,
mounted 10cm underwater, a lamp containing 24 OSRAM Golden DRAGON LEDs
radiates yellow light upwards to a height of 15 meters, illuminating
the “dragon” for four to five hours every evening.
Altogether 1,920 lamps containing 46,080 Golden DRAGON LEDs help bring the dragon fountain to life.
“The first time Tong Fang discussed their idea for the dragon fountain with us, I knew OSRAM had to be involved, as it was a perfect opportunity for us to show the versatility, efficiency and advanced technology behind our Golden DRAGON LEDs. This kind of innovative and creative thinking is precisely how we aim to revolutionize the lighting industry in China and the rest of the world,” says Dr. Alfred Felder, CEO of OSRAM Opto Semiconductors Asia.
The OSRAM Golden DRAGON advantages
Tong Fang ultimately chose to work with OSRAM Opto Semiconductors
because of the benefits inherent to using the Golden DRAGON with lens
and enhanced OSRAM Thinfilm LED technology.
The Golden DRAGON LEDs come with one of
the narrowest viewing angle
integrated lenses in the industry (just
20°), taking up less space and reducing the need for secondary optics.
Furthermore, the high optical efficiency (61lm/W) of these yellow LEDs
enhances energy efficiency, while the over 50,000 hours lifespan (under
proper operating conditions) minimizes maintenance costs.
“We’ve already received extremely positive feedbacks from people who’ve witnessed the fountain in action, especially with respect to the golden color, which resonates with traditional Chinese perceptions of dragons, as they symbolize power, prosperity and celebration; and this summer is set to be one of the biggest celebrations ever,” says Miao Chen, General Manager at Tong Fang. “OSRAM, whom we’ve worked with before, has proven once again to be a highly reliable and forward-thinking partner in providing us with this solid-state lighting solution.”
OSRAM Opto Semiconductor’s golden future
Partnering with leading Chinese companies such as Tong Fang is
a key ingredient to OSRAM Opto Semiconductors recipe for developing
China’s rising LED market. As a leader in its industry, OSRAM is
continually aimed at shaping the future of lighting in China and
developing people’s perceptions and understanding of LED technology,
which has rapidly gone from niche market/high fashion to mainstream,
mass market use, and the range of solid-state lighting applications
expands day by day. By supporting local Chinese customers who wish to
turn their next-generation lighting ideas into a reality, OSRAM Opto
Semiconductor is confident that the China LED market will continue to
flourish for years to come.

LED Indicators and signs
Status indicators on a variety of equipment are used which include traffic lights and signals, Exit signs, Railroad crossing signals, Continuity indicators and Elevator push-button Lighting .
Thin, lightweight message displays at airports and railway stations, and as destination displays for trains, buses, trams, and ferries.
Red or yellow LEDs are used in indicator and alphanumeric displays in environments where night vision must be retained: aircraft cockpits, submarine and ship bridges, astronomy observatories, and in the field, e.g. night time animal watching and military field use.
Red, yellow, green, and blue LEDs can be used for model railroading applications
In dot matrix arrangements for displaying messages.
Because of their long life and fast switching times, LEDs have been used for automotive high-mounted brake lights and truck and bus brake lights and turn signals for some time, but many high-end vehicles are now starting to use LEDs for their entire rear light clusters.
Besides the gain in reliability, this has styling advantages because LEDs are capable of forming much thinner lights than incandescent lamps with parabolic reflectors.
The significant improvement in the time taken to light up (perhaps 0.5s faster than an incandescent bulb) improves safety by giving drivers more time to react. It has been reported that at normal highway speeds this equals one car length increased reaction time for the car behind. White LED headlamps are beginning to make an appearance.
As a medium quality voltage reference in electronic circuits. The forward voltage drop (e.g., about 1.7 V for a normal red LED) can be used instead of a Zener Diode low-voltage regulators. Although LED forward voltage is much more current-dependent than a good Zener, Zener diodes are not available below voltages of about 3 V.
