Five Year Market Advantage Will Be LED Opportunity

Market conditions are right for the LED replacement lamp market to accelerate in the next few years, according to a new market report by Strategies Unlimited, the leading firm covering the LED market.

LED Market Advantages: quality of light, dimmability, controllability, lamp life and environmental cost of ownership.

Dramatic improvements in commercially available LED performance in recent years, as well as significant cost reduction, has made it feasible to design LED lamps to offer comparable lumen output and to compete with other established lighting technologies on the basis of cost of ownership.

The market is in a state of flux as utilities, energy efficiency organizations and customers look for optimum solutions which save energy, minimize the cost of ownership, and give acceptable quality of light.

Customer Education

Customers are in the process of being educated about comparing cost of ownership rather than the initial price of lamps.

Regulations Drive European Market

Regulations in Europe will ban the 100W incandescent clear glass lamp starting in September 2009, and will progressively ban all inefficient incandescent lamps by 2012 and all incandescent lamps by 2016. The Energy Information and Security Act of 2007 began the process of restricting the sale of inefficient lamps in the US.

Market Opportunities for LED Replacement Lamps

By 2012, with a few exceptions, inefficient incandescent lamps cannot be sold. Although the awareness of these regulations is still weak in the marketplace, they will create market opportunities for LED replacement lamps.

Recognizing the potential of LED technology to save energy, policy makers have been supporting the research and development of LED technology and helping its commercialization.

In the short run, while LED replacement lamps become a viable alternative, regulators are encouraging compac t fluorescent lamps (CFLs).

However, over the next five years the advantages of LED technology over CFL will become recognized, especially with respect to the quality of light, dimmability, controllability, lamp life and environmental cost of ownership.

  • Some well-designed LED lamps already offer effective lumen efficacies that compete with CFLs.
  • The commercial and industrial segments will embrace LEDs to control costs and save energy.
  • The LED lamps will be used for directed light applications, in hard-to-reach places and where the cost of re placement is very high.

Replacement Lamp Market Growth Projected at 107%

Although the market for LED replacement lamps is still in its early stages of development, the lamp revenues are forecast to grow at a CAGR of 107% through 2013.

Strategies Unlimited explores the market potential for LED lighting technology in its latest report titled LED Replacement Lamps--Market Analysis and Forecast, 2009. The report analyzes five LED-based lamp types that are designed to replace lamps that currently populate billions of sockets:

  • A-lamp and globes;
  • PAR and R lamps;
  • MR 16's;
  • candelabra and decorative lamps;
  • linear fluore scent tubes.

The markets for five categories of replacement lamps are analyzed for market drivers and challenges, trends, units and revenues for 2008. The report also offers a five-year forecast for 2009-2013.

LED Replacement Lamps--Market Analysis and Forecast, 2009 is available from Strategies Unlimited at a price of $1,895. LED Lights Used to Demo Wind Turbine Behavior

Artist Patrick Marold from Denver, Colorado has created 1,000 polycarbonate poles topped by three aluminum cups. When turned by the wind, each powers a small built-in generator attached to an LED that sends light down into the shaft, thereby, displaying the wind's power. This Windmill Project is featured in an exhibition ("Human=Landscape") hosted by Burlington City Arts in conjunction with the ECHO Lake Aquarium and Science Center and the Energy Project Vermont.

 http://energyprojectvt.com/art.htm

This array of "turbines" maps the behavior of wind and allows us to visualize the resource's invisible potential.

These tiny wind turbines highlight a huge issue that has been spinning throughout Vermont: Should the State capture the wind to generate power or should Vermont avoid building turbines because they will ruin the view of the scenic mountain ridge lines?

This exhibit will be running through November 1, 2009. You can check out (a sampling of the windmills at ECHO's "Wind: Power & Play" showcase.  Get more information at: http://www.echovermont.org/programs/cafesci-topic9.html

More than 4,200 LR24 recessed LED luminaires are planned for installation in Wedge 5 of the Pentagon as part of a major renovation.
In a signing ceremony today at the Pentagon, John J. Kubricky, Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Advanced Systems and Concepts, and Albert C. Ellet, acting director of the Washington Headquarters Service responsible for overseeing the renovation, signed an intra-departmental Memorandum of Agreement kicking-off the initiative to install LED lighting in the Pentagon.

The Cree LR24 luminaires have undergone extensive government testing and business-case analysis, including a preliminary Pentagon installation to meter the fixtures and compare the results to the alternative fluorescent technology.

This independent analysis demonstrated a 22% reduction in energy usage and improved light quality.

  • The business-case analysis yielded a payback of less than four years.
  • The payback analysis considered energy savings, lifetime maintenance savings, savings from reduced load on the HVAC system, and elimination of hazardous waste disposal fees for mercury-laden fluorescent bulbs.
  • Extensive modeling was also performed to determine optimal lighting design--analyzing the light distribution and spacing to ensure superior lighting and energy efficiency.
  • The Wedge 5 installation is estimated to save 140 tons of CO2 emissions per year.

"The U.S. federal government is taking a leadership role in energy efficiency for federal buildings both through existing mandates, as well as President-elect Obama's American Recovery and Reinvestment Plan, which calls for the renovation of public buildings to make them more energy efficient," said Chuck Swoboda, Cree chairman and chief executive officer. "Installations of highly efficient, low-maintenance LED lighting, like these in the Pentagon and in the U.S. Federal Reserve, demonstrate that the future of energy-efficient lighting is here today."

The LR24 units being used for the Pentagon renovation are being purchased from Cree by the Department of Defense's (DoD) Title III program as a part of its ongoing development program with Cree, and provided to the Washington Headquarters Services (WHS), which oversees the Pentagon renovation program.

"The Title III program has long supported the development and deployment of SiC substrates and devices for use in high-power RF and power-switching applications for DoD systems," said John Palmour, Ph.D., Cree co-founder and chief technology officer for advanced devices. "The program realized the importance of ensuring a strong domestic supply of SiC substrates and related devices, and the potential growth of solid-state lighting in the U.S. This Pentagon lighting project is a perfect example of stimulating America's leadership in high-technology manufacturing yielding unique commercial and defense products, while saving energy. Title III funding was also used to develop the technology in Cree's lighting class XLamp® XR-E LED platform--the light source in the LR24 recessed LED luminaire."

Golden Dragon LEDs at the 2008 Beijing, China Olympics

OSRAM Opto Semiconductors LEDs Illuminate the Golden "Dragon Fountain" in Olympic Park Dragon Fountain w GD with lens_1 small

Dragon-shaped water fountains in Olympic Park brightened by OSRAM Golden DRAGON LEDs

OSRAM Opto Semiconductors and Tong Fang joined hands to illuminate the elegant dragon-shaped water fountains in Beijing’s Olympic Park with OSRAM Golden DRAGON LEDs.

Tong Fang Co. Ltd. installed its dragon-shaped water fountains, located along the northeast side of the Bird’s Nest and the Water Cube in the Olympic Park, in July of this year.

The fountains were outfitted with OSRAM Golden DRAGON with lens and enhanced Thinfilm LED components, providing the “Dragon” with its characteristic golden glow.

The partnership marks OSRAM’s continued efforts to be the leader and top innovator in China’s LED market, as well as to provide support for China as it prepares to host the largest sporting event in the world.

Two impressive dragons team up

Tong Fang turned to OSRAM Opto Semiconductors for its leading-edge LED technology, but the partnership may have a deeper, if coincidental, Chinese connection as well: two dragons, OSRAM's Golden DRAGON LED lamps and Tong Fang's “dragon fountain”, working together to show strong support for Beijing’s Olympic Games.

Projects like the dragon-shaped fountains reflect the expanding opportunities customers find to create interesting and original LED solid-state lighting applications.

More than 600 meters long, the “Dragon” is formed by thousands of tiny water jets arranged in a long, gentle curve cutting through the Olympic Park, comprising a river stretching two kilometers long. The dynamic jets launch water columns as high as six meters, creating a kind of rolling wave, like the body of a dragon as it glides through the air. At the base of each column, mounted 10cm underwater, a lamp containing 24 OSRAM Golden DRAGON LEDs radiates yellow light upwards to a height of 15 meters, illuminating the “dragon” for four to five hours every evening.

Altogether 1,920 lamps containing 46,080 Golden DRAGON LEDs help bring the dragon fountain to life.

“The first time Tong Fang discussed their idea for the dragon fountain with us, I knew OSRAM had to be involved, as it was a perfect opportunity for us to show the versatility, efficiency and advanced technology behind our Golden DRAGON LEDs. This kind of innovative and creative thinking is precisely how we aim to revolutionize the lighting industry in China and the rest of the world,” says Dr. Alfred Felder, CEO of OSRAM Opto Semiconductors Asia.

The OSRAM Golden DRAGON advantages

Tong Fang ultimately chose to work with OSRAM Opto Semiconductors because of the benefits inherent to using the Golden DRAGON with lens and enhanced OSRAM Thinfilm LED technology.

The Golden DRAGON  LEDs come with one of the narrowest viewing angle
integrated lenses in the industry (just 20°), taking up less space and reducing the need for secondary optics. Furthermore, the high optical efficiency (61lm/W) of these yellow LEDs enhances energy efficiency, while the over 50,000 hours lifespan (under proper operating conditions) minimizes maintenance costs.

“We’ve already received extremely positive feedbacks from people who’ve witnessed the fountain in action, especially with respect to the golden color, which resonates with traditional Chinese perceptions of dragons, as they symbolize power, prosperity and celebration; and this summer is set to be one of the biggest celebrations ever,” says Miao Chen, General Manager at Tong Fang. “OSRAM, whom we’ve worked with before, has proven once again to be a highly reliable and forward-thinking partner in providing us with this solid-state lighting solution.”

OSRAM Opto Semiconductor’s golden future
Partnering with leading Chinese companies such as Tong Fang is a key ingredient to OSRAM Opto Semiconductors recipe for developing China’s rising LED market.  As a leader in its industry, OSRAM is continually aimed at shaping the future of lighting in China and developing people’s perceptions and understanding of LED technology, which has rapidly gone from niche market/high fashion to mainstream, mass market use, and the range of solid-state lighting applications expands day by day. By supporting local Chinese customers who wish to turn their next-generation lighting ideas into a reality, OSRAM Opto Semiconductor is confident that the China LED market will continue to flourish for years to come.

LED Indicators and signs

LEDs are rapidly rippling across the transportation and vehicle applciations because of their long life, energy efficiency, standalone solar power capability...and brightness.  Here are some recent trends in LED applications:

LED Indicators and signs

Status indicators on a variety of equipment are used which include traffic lights and signals, Exit signs, Railroad crossing signals, Continuity indicators and Elevator push-button Lighting .

Thin, lightweight message displays at airports and railway stations, and as destination displays for trains, buses, trams, and ferries.

Red or yellow LEDs are used in indicator and alphanumeric displays in environments where night vision must be retained: aircraft cockpits, submarine and ship bridges, astronomy observatories, and in the field, e.g. night time animal watching and military field use.

Red, yellow, green, and blue LEDs can be used for model railroading applications

In dot matrix arrangements for displaying messages.

Because of their long life and fast switching times, LEDs have been used for automotive high-mounted brake lights and truck and bus brake lights and turn signals for some time, but many high-end vehicles are now starting to use LEDs for their entire rear light clusters.

Besides the gain in reliability, this has styling advantages because LEDs are capable of forming much thinner lights than incandescent lamps with parabolic reflectors.

The significant improvement in the time taken to light up (perhaps 0.5s faster than an incandescent bulb) improves safety by giving drivers more time to react. It has been reported that at normal highway speeds this equals one car length increased reaction time for the car behind. White LED headlamps are beginning to make an appearance.

As a medium quality voltage reference in electronic circuits. The forward voltage drop (e.g., about 1.7 V for a normal red LED) can be used instead of a Zener Diode low-voltage regulators. Although LED forward voltage is much more current-dependent than a good Zener, Zener diodes are not available below voltages of about 3 V.

The new white colors have typical correlated color temperatures (CCT) of 3000K and 4100K and a color rendering index (CRI) of 80 and 75 respectively. The CCT range for LUXEON K2 now extends from 2670K to 10,000K and a new finer color bin structure allows for better overall selection.

Unlike most power LEDs that are limited to 700mA, LUXEON K2 warm white and neutral white LEDs can be run up to 1500mA and a junction temperature of 150°C. The new warm-white and neutral white can deliver more than 130lm and 140lm respectively. LUXEON K2 delivers more usable light at virtually any drive current and junction temperature condition.

“With the increases in light output performance and efficacy, there is expanding demand for power LEDs that deliver the quality of light required for general lighting applications,” said Steve Landau, Director of Marketing Communications. “Designers of residential applications, such as recessed can lights need uniformity, high color rendering and a warm white color temperature at 3000K. In many retail and commercial applications, a cooler temperature of 4100K is desired. With the new binning and phosphor technologies in LUXEON K2, the needs of lighting designers in both markets can be addressed.”

Lighting designers consider several critical “quality of light” factors when evaluating white LEDs: color temperature (CCT), color rendering (CRI) and color uniformity are three of the most important. The new LUXEON K2 parts address CCT and CRI and Philips Lumileds phosphor expertise and technologies ensure the highest degree of color uniformity resulting in white LEDs that are as much as 7 times more uniform that other white power LEDs.

LUXEON K2 Star, like the configuration already available in other LUXEON product families, consists of a white LUXEON K2 emitter mounted onto a metal core pc board (MCPCB). This configuration allows for rapid prototyping and production in a wide range of applications without the need to create custom level 2 boards. LUXEON Star products have been an industry standard for many years and been the configuration of choice for everything from architectural and entertainment lighting to emergency and portable lighting. Complete product information is available on the company’s website and in the LUXEON K2 datasheet also available online. LUXEON K2 warm-white and neutral-white power LEDs are in-stock and available for immediate delivery from Future Electronics. LUXEON K2 Star is stocked in limited quantities and interested parties should contact Future Electronics with their specific needs.

Buckingham Palace

R30 LED Spotlight Lamps from LEDtronics
Bespoke Lighting, who recently merged with LEDtronics, Inc., a Los Angeles, CA, based LED lighting company, combined their skills in developing a unique method of illuminating chandeliers using light emitting diodes (LEDs).

The project was undertaken at the request of The Royal Household, in an effort to reduce energy consumption and maintenance costs. The center room chandelier was nominated and all 32 twenty-five watt tungsten lamps were removed, and a low voltage system controlling 2.8 watt light emitting diode lamps (STL610-48-XIW-024M) were installed initiating an energy saving in excess of 80%. The next re-lamping will not be needed to be scheduled until 2020.

The next chandelier to be converted will be fitted with a warmer version of LED lamps, perfectly recreating the color temperature of tungsten lamps. “ The aesthetics of the respective rooms is a major consideration and consequently we needed an option on the color of the lamps. Bespoke lighting and LEDtronics have succeeded in providing the perfect solution for The Royal Household .and their energy saving strategy has been greatly enhanced”, said Pervaiz Lodhie, president and founder of LEDtronics and co-owner of Bespoke Lighting International. “We are now perfecting an LED candle lamp for The Palace that will again assist them in their commitment to saving energy”.

LEDtronics  also recently worked jointly with Bespoke in illuminating the Grand Staircase in Buckingham Palace. They installed around 32,000 LED’s which included a combination of warm white combined with red, green and blue LED’s giving a range of several thousand color temperatures. The system is controlled remotely by radio transmitter.

LEDtronics Drop-in Replacement LED Bulbs for MR16

R30 LED Spotlight Lamps from LEDtronics

November, 2007 — LEDtronics introduces an addition to its line of drop-in replacement MR16-styled LED bulbs: High-powered 3Watt LED MR16 bulbs.

These new 3Watt MR16 LED bulbs have two big advantages over other MR16 LED bulbs.

First, they are engineered to handle the variations in voltages that may accompany “noisy” or “dirty” AC or DC power supplies, eliminating potential burnout from incoming voltage that is higher than the lamp’s capacity. Second, the new 3Watt MR16 bulbs eliminate the need to stock a variety of LED MR16 bulbs to coordinate with different voltages that power supplies of 12Volt AC/DC – 24Volt DC may present, simplifying procurement and inventory procedures.

High-powered 3Watt LED MR16 bulbs (Series Number MR16-3W) have the following characteristics; bi-pin bases just like standard incandescent MR16 bulbs, and light outputs of 102.9 lumens using only 2.6Watts with 12Volts DC, 120.6lumens using only 3.7Watts with 12Volts AC, and 140.7 lumens using only 3.8Watts with 24Volts DC. The bulb features three High-Power LEDs and is offered in Cool White (6500 Kelvin) and Warm White (3000 Kelvin) color temperatures. Both Warm and Cool Whites are offered in 61° beam angles (2 ½). With factory approval, MR16-3W bulbs may be ordered in other LED colors, voltages and beam angles.

MR16-3W bulbs carry a three-year limited warranty.

Unlike halogen MR16 lamps that create potentially damaging heat and have caused fires when accidentally in contact with other objects, LED-sourced MR16-3W bulbs generate less heat while operating and pose no threat to the objects they are illuminating or their surroundings.

Lighting professionals, architects, industrial designers and maintenance departments will find these MR16-3W lamps to be excellent solutions for their maintenance-free and low-voltage applications. MR16-3W lamps are commonly used for accent, task, and display lighting, track lighting in museums, jewelry stores, and hotels. They are excellent for both residential lighting situations and entertainment venues like theaters, restaurants, and theme parks.

With an average White LED lifespan of up to 50,000-hours (five years), LEDs operate reliably year after year. Solid-state design renders LEDs impervious to electrical and mechanical shock, vibration, frequent switching and environmental fluctuation. Integrated current-limited resistors prevent short-circuiting. LED lamps use only 10%-20% of the energy consumed by equivalent incandescent lamps. When combined with their maintenance-free operation this results in substantial cost savings.

eco-friendly, energy saving LEDtronics light bulb used in the new lamps. Photo Credit: Ben Ryan Photography

CARPINTERIA, Calif. — February 26, 2008 — Holland Scott Gallery debuts the Environmentally Responsible Green Energy Fine Art Lamps. These lamps combine energy-efficiency technology with fine-art design.

Elegant photographic floral images and art-deco linoleum patterns from the 1930's are the result of energy efficient LED (Light Emitting Diode) lamp technology and the Giclée (zhee-clay) fine-art printmaking process. The Giclée printmaking process uses permanent archival vegetable die inks on the cylindrical illuminated photographic image. Additional lamp designs are in production.

Omni-directional, these LED lamps provide the correct color temperature of daylight for displaying naturally brilliant photographic colors. They also generate no heat and are free from harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays that may cause fading over time. More importantly, LED lamps use 80 to 90 percent less energy than the incandescent lamps they replace.

Inventor and artist, Candy Hawthorne, along with her husband and art dealer, Scott, also a professional photographer and a true-digital art pioneer, are the brains behind the first Green Energy Fine Art Lamps. They have been creating art mediums with computers and technology since 1978.

Scott is a designer and creative evangelist; his contemporary photographic works are represented in each lamp he designs.

"The natural photographic beauty is complemented with the soft LED lighting; these new lamps look spectacular," Scott said. "The eco-friendliness of the new lamps is also very exciting."

The new long lasting LED lighting is provided by LEDtronics, one of the leading LED lighting design and manufacturing companies in the U.S. of direct incandescent replacement long life and energy saving LED bulbs. The LEDtronics lights that are being using are their TRF-G30-XCW-02 for the larger Art lamps and the TRF-A19-XCW-02 for the smaller Art lamps.

Ledtronics, Inc. listens -- and many of the new ideas come from their customers. When faced with an "impossible" challenge from one of their customers, the Ledtronics team often finds a new product is created and a new market born in the bargain.

They are expanding markets for LED lighting in the following markets:
Aerospace, Architectural Lighting, Automation, Automotive, Aviation, Broadcasting, Datacomm/Telecomm, Electronic Instrumentation, Elevators, Entertainment, Gaming, Government Agencies, Industrial Automation, Medical, Military / Defense, Panel Indicators, Photo Development, Printed Circuit Boards, Security Sensors, Solar Power Products, Traffic and Safety, Transportation, Utilities and Video.

For example: Architecture / Interior Design

LEDs are emerging as a mainstream tool for architects, interior designers and lighting professionals with the vision to move beyond the limits of incandescent, fluorescent and neon.

LEDTronics pioneered the use of multi-LED arrays on conventional electrical bases. This innovation has opened up a vast spectrum of creative possibilities to any professional dealing with interior or environmental lighting. LED arrays are used as accent lighting in hard-to-reach places where frequent relamping is impractical. With a life span of 100,000 hours (that's more than 10 years), LEDs are far preferable to incandescents in such situations.

SolarLEDs™ provide energy-efficiency vastly greater than conventional lighting, and are ideal for any battery-driven application, or, any time minimal power consumption is required.

StripLights™ and PathLights™ provide directional lighting for steps, stairways and walkways.

Although LEDs can successfully replace incandescent and other forms of illumination in almost all cases, there are some considerations which must be taken into account. Unlike incandescent lamps, LEDs produce light in a single wavelength and a single direction. Commercial Real Estate Applications for LED Savings

Energy use is the single largest operating expense in commercial office buildings, representing approximately one-third of typical operating budgets and accounting for almost 20 percent of the nation’s annual greenhouse gas emissions.

In a 200,000-square foot office building that pays $2 per square foot in energy costs, a 10 percent reduction in energy consumption can translate into an additional $120,000 of NOI. At a cap rate of 8 percent, this could mean a potential asset value boost of $500,000!

Commercial real estate applications for energy strategy includes  any multi-family residential, office, industrial, or retail property that can be bought or sold in a real estate market.

Office buildings waste up to one-third of the energy they consume.

Low-Cost Measures
  • Measure and track energy performance.
  • Turn off lights when not in use or when natural daylight can be used.
  • Set back the thermostat in the evenings and other times when a building is unoccupied.
  • Educate tenants and employees about how their behaviors affect energy use.
  • Improve operations and maintenance practices by regularly checking and maintaining equipment to ensure it is functioning efficiently.
  • Optimize start-up time, power-down time, and equipment sequencing.
  • Revise janitorial practices to reduce the hours that lights are turned on each day.
  • Use ENERGY STAR Target Finder to integrate efficiency goals into the design of new properties.
Cost-Effective Investments
  • Engage in energy audits and retrocommissioning to identify areas of inefficiency.
  • Install energy-efficient lighting systems, ENERGY STAR qualified compact fluorescent lights (CFLs), light-emitting diode (LED) exit signs, and occupancy sensors where feasible.
  • Install window films and add insulation or reflective roof coating to reduce energy consumption.
  • Purchase energy-efficient products like ENERGY STAR qualified office and commercial food service equipment.
  • Retrofit, upgrade, or install new heating and cooling equipment to meet reduced loads and take advantage of efficient technologies.
  • Use a performance contract to guarantee energy savings from upgrades made.
  • Work with an energy services provider to manage and improve performance.

Flexible LED strips for Million Color RGB Displays

Flexible LED strips are versatile, waterproof stips of LED lights that are priced by the inch. Common uses include wheel wells, installation under the car for cool-dude 'tudes, under the dash, the trunk, and accent lighting for the dude's home pad. These fleixble strips of exceedingly bright LED bulbs are adaptable and easy to install.

Groups of Red, Blue, and Green LEDs can combine at varying brightness intensities to produce a smooth fade through the full color spectrum. Unlike the single color strips which use just 2 wires (a power and a ground), the million color strips use 4 wires (3 for each of the colors, and 1 for either a common power or ground). These 4 wires are hooked up to an LED controller.
