Education Matters for Solar

Developed and managed by Bonneville Environmental Foundation (BEF), Solar 4R Schools provides schools nationwide with hands-on teaching tools such as science kits, lesson plans and photovoltaic solar arrays so students can learn about solar, wind and other renewable energy technologies.

The program provides hands-on activity guides, science kits and demonstration solar electric systems at no cost to schools, by working with local funding partners who want to show their commitment to renewable energy education. To receive a solar-electric system, schools must agree to own and maintain the system after installation. In turn, the school receives an exciting learning tool and all of the clean, renewable electricity it produces.

Solar 4R Schools program reached a major milestone in May 2010 - 2,000,000 kilowatt hours generated! Since the program began in 2002, the more than 150 projects that the Solar 4R Schools team has installed, repaired or added data monitoring to have combined to generate enough electricity to power an average American home for 181 years or power a TV for 9,132 years. This amount of electricity from fossil-fueled sources would have emitted 2,800,000 pounds of CO2.
