The RoHS (Restriction of use of Hazardous Substances) legislation covers the restriction of lead and other potentially hazardous substances used in electrical and electronic equipment. Known as Directive 2002/95/EC, it is enforced throughout the EU since 1st July 2006 .

Its purpose is very clear – to restrict the use of six substances within electrical and electronic equipment (EEE), thereby contributing to the protection of human health and the environment.

For many electronics manufacturers, this is a considerable environmental challenge.
Manufacturers who owns the brand under which the product is distributed, or persons who authorizes another original equipment manufacturer (OEM) to produce the product on their behalf can expand their market qualifications to compete in regulated areas that require RoHS compliance.

At a first step we will certify only homogenous material and electrical components. Once certified, a commitment that the product sold on the market is identical with the certified product and is produced by same production process and same constituents is required. RoHS conformity is required for Europe, China, Korea, Japan, California etc.

The SGS RoHS Certification Program is aimed at helping producers meet the strict requirements of RoHS compliance and RoHS standard (EU RoHS and China RoHS) and where necessary, take corrective actions to meet the maximum concentration of substances allowed.

The SGS RoHS Certification Program is a single product certification which can be extended for certification of a product series, as long as the range of products are produced using the same raw materials, the management system has a similar function and the “basic design” has not changed significantly. The RoHS certificate (RoHS label or RoHS mark) is valid for 5 years.

Cree Is A Market Leader in LED Technology Development

A North Carolina-based LED research company, LED Lighting Fixtures, announced that it had created the world's most energy-efficient LED light, one that uses 5.8 watts of electricity to create as much light as a 60-watt incandescent lightbulb. And following that news, LED Lighting Fixtures also announced that they are now part of Cree, Inc.

The company is developing a lamp that uses less energy than its current LED fixtures but emits the same amount of light. A federal study by the National Institute of Standards and Technology confirms that the product is the most efficient in the world. It uses 5.8 watts of power, compared with 60 watts for an equally bright incandescent bulb.

According to the National Institute report, the new fixture uses less than 9 percent of the energy consumed by common bulbs and less than 30 percent of that consumed by fluorescent lights. LLF's best existing product consumes 15 percent of the energy used by an incandescent bulb and 50 percent of that used by fluorescents.

Hunter said he hopes to debut the brighter and more efficient lamps by the end of 2008. The first buyers will likely be wholesale distributors, followed by consumers off store shelves by 2009.

The Department of Energy has estimated that LEDs could reduce national energy consumption for lighting by 29% by 2025.

That would save U.S. households $125 billion on their electric bills.

Semiconductor-based LEDs use much less power than traditional bulbs, don't contain mercury like fluorescents, and they last for years, sometimes even decades. Recent years have seen very exciting developments in this area, with Orlando, Ann Arbor, Detroit and Taiwan announcing switches of traffic lights to LEDs.

2007's Rockefeller Center Christmas tree in New York will even be lit with the technology -- strung along 5 miles of wire!

Advances in lighting technology have increased in scale and scope lately, as the world takes action on climate change. Last month, General Electric announced that it would close its incandescent facilities as it planned to stop making energy-intensive incandescent lightbulbs in favor of compact fluorescent and LED products.

And governments large and small have been passing bans on incandescent lightbulbs in recent months, including China's 10-year plan and Ontario's five-year plan to ban incandescent bulbs. Several U.S. states and U.S. senators and representatives have introduced legislation ban incandescents domestically.

building with cement and carbon footprint reduction Solar Cynergy's theme is "Bringing Japanese innovation to the lighting industry."

John Huang, Corona, CA based sales and marketing manager explains that Solar Cynergy has married the sustainable contributions of Japan and the US. "As a Berkeley alum, I'm extremely interested in sustainable design and products and am hoping to educate the general public on the strides and advances in solar lighting technology."

Solar Cynergy introduced a family of solar LED lighting technology for residential, commercial and city applications in May at the 2007 Lightfair International Trade Show & Conference. One patented advantage offered by Solar Cynergy is that the solar collection panels are removed from view.

Solar Cynergy is a unique solar LED light utilizing patent protected condenser technology in place of traditional batteries to provide the user with brighter and more colorful illuminations with an industrial strength stand alone unit. Off-grid. Affordable cost. Long life. "Solar LED lighting has really improved in the past few years," he notes," pricing is continuing to fall, more colors are available, and the quality has improved so that new products can last as long as 25 years."

Solar Cynergy on-ground lights are strong enough to withstand even a tank driving over it! building with cement and carbon footprint reduction building with cement and carbon footprint reduction

Application & Use of Solar LED Lights

From enhancing the decor of a backyard and illuminating walkways to providing hazard and safety lighting to parks, schools, dangerous intersections or crosswalks, Solar Cynergy offers facilities and communities an eco-friendly and cost-effective alternative to conventional wired lighting.

Embedded into the ground, each solar LED unit is self contained, free from complicated wiring, and provides a colorful luminescent glow that is resistant to the elements, charges even on cloudy days, and industrial models can provide 15 hours of output (residential models: 8-10 hours) on an average 8-12 hour charge. That's two nights of light for a typical day's charge.

Innovative Design of Solar LED Environmental Lighting

  • The Solar Cynergy RSC series is made of a polycarbonate resin and utilizes two double layered condensers, allowing for explicit illumination and eliminating the hassle of switching batteries.
  • Using solar energy, the light automatically charges during the day (on 12,000 lumens -- about equal to a cloudy day or a hazy late afternoon -- and automatically turns on as the sun sets.
  • Lighting choices are available in blue, green, white, halogen white and red.
  • 10 MW LEDs provide non-invasive lighting with a glow that isn't strong enough to contribute to light pollution of the night skies.
  • For more industrial applications, the CSL series offers cities with high grade flashing solutions that are ideal as hazard or safety precautions on streets, or along sidewalks.
building with cement and carbon footprint reduction

Sourcing Solar LED Lights

All Solar Cynergy products are manufactured in Japan. When asked about the cost-effectiveness and environmental aspects of manufacturing these LED lights in Japan, John Huang at Solar Cynergy in Cornoa, CA, replied, "while we do manufacture overseas in Japan (for technology and efficiency reasons), we ship units over in large quantities by sea and keep inventories in our Corona warehouse. Unfortunately, there is a tremendous amount of technology within each unit and manufacturing in the US would drive up cost and make our technology less accessible to consumers."

Solar Cynergy concentrates on cost-effective advances in solar technology and is rooted both in the United States and Japan. Solar Cynergy fuses design and innovation with conservation and sustainability. "Our line of solar LED models has a lifetime expectancy of 25+ years which we stand by with a 10 year manufacturer's warranty. Avoiding the cost of running conduit or wires and the added flexibility of placing accent lighting away from any grids, we feel you would break even within the year. However it depends on a case by case analysis depending on how much current exterior/accent lighting you currently use, etc.

"We work with a number of professional installers that we outsource business to," says Huang. Two of the California sources for leading-edge lighting sources to comply with LEED and California Preferable Products are Southern California Illumination (Los Angeles) and O'Connor Sales (San Diego).

LED Technology is Disruptive Innovation

LEDs Are a Disruptive Technology

Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are compound semiconductor devices that convert electricity to light. Invented by GE scientists in the 1960s, LEDs are vastly different from traditional incandescent, fluorescent and neon light sources.

LEDs stand out because -- unlike lamps that can shatter -- they are robust and highly resistant to shock and vibration. Due to the solid-state nature of LEDs, there are no filaments to break, no moving parts to fail and no glass components of any kind. With LEDs, breakage during transportation, installation or operation - a common problem of traditional light sources - is virtually eliminated. This robustness speeds installation times and installer training.

The benefits of using LEDs vary depending on the application, but typical technology features include:

  • Up to 90 percent energy-cost savings
  • A long life of up to 50,000 hours
  • Minimized maintenance hassles and costs
  • Low-voltage operation
  • Excellent cold-weather performance
Environmental friendliness is also a factor, as LEDs do not contain mercury, and they save very significant amounts of energy that is frequently generated with non-renewable energy sources such as coal, natural gas and petroleum.

In October, 2007, GE Consumer & Industrial announced layoffs of 1400 workers and the closing of seven incandescent light bulb plants in response to consumer demand for more energy-efficient lighting.

GE plans to focus more on developing and producing compact fluorescent lighting (CFL) and LED products.  Businesses and even governments are following the same preferential buying of energy efficient light fixtures and bulbs.  China and Australia, for example, have also signaled their intent to completely phase out incandescents.

GE is investing in new lighting technologies, such as LEDs, organic LEDs and high-efficiency incandescents.

GE's "ecomagination" program converges economic and social needs with GE's unique positioning n the market.  The need for lower-cost, cleaner and more secure energy coincides with the need for cleaner, more abundant sources of usable water.  GE's combination of technologies, operating skills and global merchandising reach makes them uniquely positioned to help solve these problems by upgrading their vast catalog of products and services.

In October, the US EPA conducted a major campaign in conjunction with several companies, called the "Change-A-Light" campaign.  And Wal-Mart announced it had reached its goal of selling 1 million CFLs.

GE's announcement was the latest story in a restructuring trend that has already impacted 3,000 jobs from facility closures, work transfers, employee reductions and sales of operations at sites in the U.S., Europe, China, Indonesia, Latin America and India.

A road-paving mistake was going to cost over $9,000 to cut the concrete, lay conduit and then repave it. The developer was desperate for other options to light a  6' x 9' Canyon Pines sign. A local solar contractor was able to provide a reliable, efficient and economical solution.

LEDtronics Inc. provided an efficient, largely hidden, and bright LED lighting solution. Mr. Bruce Howard, a LEDtronics representative from Howard Industrial Sales Inc., assisted Canyon Pines with  two  LEDtronics  LED Flood Lights.

These LED floodlights are designed to run on 12 volts DC with solar panels. This allowed lighting the sign without incurring costly landscaping and electrical power line costs. The LED floodlights provide cold white lighting (8,000K) using 5mm LEDs that remain cool enough to touch. These LEDs consume only 12 watts of power per floodlight compared to the power hungry 40 watt or 100 watt incandescent spot lights normally used in this application.

Now the whole system can be run on a 123 watt solar panel and a small battery bank. The solar cells charge the battery during the day, which in turn powers the LED floodlights at night.

The installation of this solar power LED lighting system only took two people one and a half days to complete. To extend the life of the system and operate during long periods of cloudy weather, three 86 AH Gel batteries are provided as well. To provide a clean and unobstructed view of the land they hid most of the lighting system inside artificial rocks.

The developer uses these floodlights 8 hours a night. With the electrical rates of 12 cents per kWH, batteries lasting 10 to 15 years, a warranty on the solar panel for 25 years, and LED light lifespan of 50,000 hours, he expects this system to pay for itself in 5 years.

If you consider the alternative cost for running 120volt electrical lines this solar powered lighting system paid for itself immediately.

R30 LED Spotlight Lamps from LEDtronicsJuly 2007 -- LEDtronics® announces its latest generation
of R30 LED Reflector spotlight bulbs. These direct incandescent replacement bulbs combine advanced Light Emitting Diode (LED) technologies, standard 25mm Edison bases and light optimizing designs to produce vivid light.

R30 LED bulbs are available in five light emitting angles (15°, 20°, 30°, 40° and 95°) and in 120 volts AC. Other voltages from 12V to 240V—AC or DC—are available for qualified customers.

With a power draw of only 4.5Watts the savings add up quickly. R30 LED colors available are Warm White 3000 Kelvin, Pure White 5500Kelvin, Cool White 8000Kelvin, 633nm Red, 592nm Yellow, 525nm Aqua Green and 470nm Blue. Infrared lamps are offered in wavelengths of 850nm, 880nm and 940nm.

Having LED operating lives of up to eleven years and seven sunlight-visible LED light colors—as well as infrared—from which to select, solid-state R30 LED bulbs are the practical and economical way for architects, display designers, visual merchandisers, entertainment designers and other lighting professionals to integrate ornamental illumination into what were formerly maintenance-intensive applications.

Furthermore, an LED cluster lamp continues to provide light even if one or more emitters fail—unlike when the filament fails in an incandescent bulb. R30 LED bulbs are designed to perform well in systems subjected to voltage dips or surges. Integrated current-limited resistors ensure that no circuit modifications are required.

Colored lenses or filters are not needed since LEDs emit colored light that is determined by the composition of the semiconductor material comprising the diode. Intensity and color remain stable over the lamp's life. LED technology is an energy-efficient light source; saving 80% – 90% of energy costs compared to a 55- or 65Watt incandescent R30 lamp. Because LEDs use very little energy and are virtually maintenance-free the cost savings are substantial.

Solid-state design renders LEDs impervious to electrical and mechanical shock, vibration, frequent switching and environmental extremes. With an average lifespan of 100,000-plus hours (11 years)—up to 50,000 hours for white LEDs—LED bulbs operate reliably year after year and are appropriate for many energy-saving utilizations.

R30 LED bulbs are the ideal solution for decorative and nighttime task-lighting applications including
large message panels, billboards, scoreboards, time-and-temperature signs, arcade machines, casino accent lighting, theme-and-amusement parks, stage lighting, carnivals, theaters, as uplights/downlights for wall-washing, tree-washing, and other decorative lighting.

These direct incandescent replacement bulbs combine advanced Light Emitting Diode (LED) technologies, standard 25mm Edison screw bases and light-optimizing designs to produce vivid light.

PAR20 LED bulbs are available in three light emitting angles (15°, 20°, and 22°) and in 120 volts AC. Other voltages like 12V to 240V AC or DC are available for qualified customers.

PAR20 Short-Neck LED bulbs measure 3.50 inches long and have a 2.53 inch diameter making them ideal for small spotlighting tasks, artwork accenting, and recessed lighting for ambient illumination. With a power draw of only 2.5 Watts the savings quickly add up over the standard PAR20 incandescent bulbs they replace.

The standard PAR20 LED colors available are Warm White and XWarm White (3000 Kelvin), Cool White (7000 Kelvin), Super Red (633nm) and Aqua Green (525nm). Other LED colors as well as Infrared lamps are offered for qualified customers and quantities.

With up to eleven years of LED operating life and five sunlight-visible LED light colors from which to select, solid-state PAR20 LED bulbs are a practical and economical way for architects, retail store display creators, entertainment designers and other lighting professionals to integrate ornamental illumination into maintenance-intensive applications. Additionally, LED cluster lamps continue to provide light even if one or more emitters fail-unlike when the filament breaks inside incandescent bulbs. LEDtronics' PAR20 LED bulbs are designed to perform well in systems subjected to voltage dips or surges. Integrated current-limited resistors ensure that no circuit modifications are required.

Colored lenses or filters are not needed since LEDs emit colored light that is determined by the composition of the semiconductor material comprising the diode. Intensity and color remain stable over the lamp's lifetime.

LED technology is an energy-efficient directional light source; saving 80% - 90% of energy costs compared to a 30- or 50-Watt incandescent PAR20 lamps. Because LEDs use very little energy, produce little-to-no heat, and are virtually maintenance free the cost savings are substantial.

Solid-state design renders LEDs impervious to electrical and mechanical shock, vibration, frequent switching, and environmental extremes. With an average lifespan of up to 100,000-plus hours (11 years)-up to 50,000 hours for white LEDs-LED bulbs operate reliably year after year. PAR20 LED bulbs are the ideal solution for decorative task lighting and nighttime applications including tracklight fixtures, reading lights, and small ceiling cans. Other applications include large message panels, billboards, scoreboards, time-and-temperature signs, arcade machines, casino accent illumination, and lighting for stages, theaters, carnivals, theme parks and amusement parks. PAR20 LED bulbs can be used as individual pixels in large dot-matrix screens, digital time/temperature signs or full-color display screens.

LEDtronics Drop-in Replacement LED Bulbs for MR16

R30 LED Spotlight Lamps from LEDtronics

November, 2007 — LEDtronics introduces an addition to its line of drop-in replacement MR16-styled LED bulbs: High-powered 3Watt LED MR16 bulbs.

These new 3Watt MR16 LED bulbs have two big advantages over other MR16 LED bulbs.

First, they are engineered to handle the variations in voltages that may accompany “noisy” or “dirty” AC or DC power supplies, eliminating potential burnout from incoming voltage that is higher than the lamp’s capacity. Second, the new 3Watt MR16 bulbs eliminate the need to stock a variety of LED MR16 bulbs to coordinate with different voltages that power supplies of 12Volt AC/DC – 24Volt DC may present, simplifying procurement and inventory procedures.

High-powered 3Watt LED MR16 bulbs (Series Number MR16-3W) have the following characteristics; bi-pin bases just like standard incandescent MR16 bulbs, and light outputs of 102.9 lumens using only 2.6Watts with 12Volts DC, 120.6lumens using only 3.7Watts with 12Volts AC, and 140.7 lumens using only 3.8Watts with 24Volts DC. The bulb features three High-Power LEDs and is offered in Cool White (6500 Kelvin) and Warm White (3000 Kelvin) color temperatures. Both Warm and Cool Whites are offered in 61° beam angles (2 ½). With factory approval, MR16-3W bulbs may be ordered in other LED colors, voltages and beam angles.

MR16-3W bulbs carry a three-year limited warranty.

Unlike halogen MR16 lamps that create potentially damaging heat and have caused fires when accidentally in contact with other objects, LED-sourced MR16-3W bulbs generate less heat while operating and pose no threat to the objects they are illuminating or their surroundings.

Lighting professionals, architects, industrial designers and maintenance departments will find these MR16-3W lamps to be excellent solutions for their maintenance-free and low-voltage applications. MR16-3W lamps are commonly used for accent, task, and display lighting, track lighting in museums, jewelry stores, and hotels. They are excellent for both residential lighting situations and entertainment venues like theaters, restaurants, and theme parks.

With an average White LED lifespan of up to 50,000-hours (five years), LEDs operate reliably year after year. Solid-state design renders LEDs impervious to electrical and mechanical shock, vibration, frequent switching and environmental fluctuation. Integrated current-limited resistors prevent short-circuiting. LED lamps use only 10%-20% of the energy consumed by equivalent incandescent lamps. When combined with their maintenance-free operation this results in substantial cost savings.

Ledtronics, Inc. listens -- and many of the new ideas come from their customers. When faced with an "impossible" challenge from one of their customers, the Ledtronics team often finds a new product is created and a new market born in the bargain.

They are expanding markets for LED lighting in the following markets:
Aerospace, Architectural Lighting, Automation, Automotive, Aviation, Broadcasting, Datacomm/Telecomm, Electronic Instrumentation, Elevators, Entertainment, Gaming, Government Agencies, Industrial Automation, Medical, Military / Defense, Panel Indicators, Photo Development, Printed Circuit Boards, Security Sensors, Solar Power Products, Traffic and Safety, Transportation, Utilities and Video.

For example: Architecture / Interior Design

LEDs are emerging as a mainstream tool for architects, interior designers and lighting professionals with the vision to move beyond the limits of incandescent, fluorescent and neon.

LEDTronics pioneered the use of multi-LED arrays on conventional electrical bases. This innovation has opened up a vast spectrum of creative possibilities to any professional dealing with interior or environmental lighting. LED arrays are used as accent lighting in hard-to-reach places where frequent relamping is impractical. With a life span of 100,000 hours (that's more than 10 years), LEDs are far preferable to incandescents in such situations.

SolarLEDs™ provide energy-efficiency vastly greater than conventional lighting, and are ideal for any battery-driven application, or, any time minimal power consumption is required.

StripLights™ and PathLights™ provide directional lighting for steps, stairways and walkways.

Although LEDs can successfully replace incandescent and other forms of illumination in almost all cases, there are some considerations which must be taken into account. Unlike incandescent lamps, LEDs produce light in a single wavelength and a single direction. LEDTronics designs cluster arrays to increase the amount of illumination, or package them as bar graphs or with right angles.

Staples’ energy policy is rooted in its commitment to protect natural resources through sustainable business practices. This commitment covers four major areas:

  • Purchase and promotion of products containing post-consumer recycled materials,
  • Energy conservation and renewable-power procurement,
  • Recycling initiatives, and
  • Environmental education to build awareness among associates and consumers
Staples opened its first “green store” prototype in 2003, in East Wareham, Mass. It was built from the ground up to be as energy efficient as possible, starting with the materials used in its construction. Several of the lighting designs to save energy include:

  • T-8 single-lamp fixtures with dimmable ballasts (work in con-junction with skylights)
  • High-efficiency pulse-start parking-lot lights
  • LED signage
  • Back-room motion sensors
Energy planning is carefully integrated into Staples’ organizational model. The chain’s energy team, in place for many years, develops strategies for each component of energy management on an annual basis.

Staples joined EPA’s Green Power Partnership Program in 2002, with a commitment to purchase 2% of its total energy load from green or renewable power sources by the end of 2003. The chain made good on its promise and then some. Currently, renewable power accounts for 10% of the chain’s total annual
U.S. electricity consumption, making it the largest purchaser of green power in retail

Energy Strategy Includes Power Reductions

EPA’s experience, through its interactions with U.S. companies, is that many are initiating energy programs. For companies operating formal energy programs, these programs are typically less than 5 years old.

Market trends suggest that the demand for energy resources will rise dramatically over the next 25 years:

  • Global demand for all energy sources is forecast to grow by 57% over the next 25 years.
  • U.S. demand for all types of energy is expected to increase by 31% within 25 years.
  • By 2030, 56% of the world’s energy use will be in Asia.
  • Electricity demand in the U.S. will grow by at least 40% by 2032.
  • New power generation equal to nearly 300 (1,000MW) power plants will be needed to meet electricity demand by 2030.
  • Currently, 50% of U.S. electrical generation relies on coal, a fossil fuel; while 85% of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions result from energy-consuming activities supported by fossil fuels.
Sources: Annual Energy Outlook (DOE/EIA-0383(2007)), International Energy Outlook 2007 (DOE/EIA-0484(2007), Inventory of U.S. Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Sinks: 1990-2005 (April 2007) (EPA 430-R-07-002)

If energy prices also rise dramatically due to increased demand and constrained supply, business impacts could include:

  • Reduced profits due to high operating costs.
  • Decline of sales of energy-using products.
  • Loss of competitiveness in energy intensive businesses.
  • Disruptions in supply chains as suppliers are unable to meet cost obligations or go bankrupt.
Energy reduction plans can benefit from increased installation of high-efficiency LED lighting systems.

The ENERGY STAR criteria cover the requirements for SSL products used for general illumination, including
those with significant decorative function.

If a decorative SSL product serves a significant general illumination function, it falls within the scope of these criteria. The criteria apply to both residential and commercial products. The criteria apply only to products designed to be connected to the electric power grid. In addition, they do not apply to SSL products made for indication (such as traffic lights and exit signs); to products exclusively intended for decoration (such as holiday lights); nor to SSL products intended for retrofit into existing fixtures.

The general requirements apply to both Categories A and B. Additional requirements for correlated color temperature (CCT), luminaire efficacy, zonal lumen density, and minimum light output are listed under
Categories A and B.

A few key requirements include:

  • Luminaires shall not draw power in the off state (but there are exceptions)
  • A warranty must be provided for luminaires, covering repair or replacement of defective electrical parts (including light source and power supplies) for a minimum of three (3) years from the date of purchase.
  • Luminaire manufacturers shall adhere to device manufacturer guidelines, certification programs, and test procedures for thermal management.
  • LED module(s)/array(s) shall deliver at least 70% of initial lumens, when installed in-situ, for the minimum number of hours specified below:
Residential Indoor: 25,000 hours
Residential Outdoor: 35,000 hours
All Commercial: 35,000 hours
  • Power supplies designated by the manufacturer for residential applications must meet FCC requirements for consumer use (FCC 47 CFR Part 15/18 Consumer Emission Limits).
  • Included documentation must clearly state any known incompatibility with photo-controls, dimmers or timing devices.

DOE has finalized a new ENERGY STAR specification for solid state lighting luminaires, including LEDs. The criteria goes into effect September 30, 2008.

Under normal circumstances, DOE would establish an effective date 270 days after public release of the final criteria. However, additional time is required for these criteria because the LM-80 Lumen Depreciation test procedure has not yet been adopted by ANSI and IESNA.

Solid State Lighting (SSL) Luminaires

The ENERGY STAR Program Requirements for Solid State Lighting (SSL) Luminaires are intended for general illumination. SSL general illumination devices were not previously covered by any ENERGY STAR product category, although there are other product categories using light emitting diodes (LEDs) for non-illumination purposes, including indication and decoration.

DOE is leading ENERGY STAR management, specification development, and partner relations for SSL devices used for general illumination, including:

  • Residential, commercial, industrial, and outdoor lighting SSL applications of all types
  • Innovative SSL systems applications of all types (includes "free-form" SSL systems, and those incorporated into furniture, buildings, and equipment)

Solid-state lighting differs fundamentally from traditional lighting technologies in terms of materials, drivers, system architecture, controls, and photometric properties. A host of new test procedures and industry standards is needed to accommodate these technical differences.

Exit Signs

EPA will suspend the ENERGY STAR Exit Sign specification effective May 1, 2008. In EPAct 2005, Congress passed a new minimum federal efficiency standard for electrically-powered, single-faced exit signs with integral light sources that are equivalent to ENERGY STAR levels for input power demand. EPAct 2005 references the ENERGY STAR Version 2.0 specification. All exit signs manufactured on or after January 1, 2006 must have an input power demand of 5 watts or less per face.

If all U.S. companies switched to ENERGY STAR qualified exit signs, they would save $75 million in electricity costs.

Remember, saving energy prevents pollution.
There are more than 100 million exit signs in use throughout the U.S. Typically lit by incandescent bulbs, these signs consume 30-35 billion kilowatt hours (kWh) hours of energy each year.

Energy Star maintains a Manufacturers List of Energy Star Partners

A few of these 61 EXIT SIGN manufacturers listed for California locations  include:  Active Safety Corporation, American Permalight, Bright Path Lighting, DMF Lighting, EEMA Industries/Liton Lighting, Facdir, inc., Glow Zone, Nora Lighting, Orbit Industries, Pacific Lighting/Utopia Lighting, Sun & Stars Lighting, US Energy Technologies

Evaluating LED Products

Compare LEDs with most energy efficient lighting available for the specific application.  The US Department of Energy recommends the following evaluation metrics:

Verify lumens per watt
    Incandescent            12-15 lpw
    CFL                          50 lpw
LEDs                        ~20-45 lpw depending on specific LEDs

Verify total light output
Product manufacturers often don't report it
Determine whether the fixture/system is sufficient for the needed amount of light for the task

Calculate cost
Conventional (CFL, incandescent)    $1/1000 lumens (klm)
    LEDs                                             $50/klm
LEDs on 24/7 or hard to reach areas: potential cost savings on maintenance

Assess need for special LED features
    Durability, accessibility

Check LED color output
    Bluer tones than fluorescents
    Warmer tones less efficient

Obtain a sample for testing

LED Technology Update - 2006

Technology of LEDs is advancing rapidly.  In 2006 the "White Light" SSL Challenges included Lifetime lumen maintenance and thermal management; luminous efficacy, color quality, cost and test procedures and standards.

Color temperature and color consistency have been challenges.  Different color appearance within shipments of white LEDs, and color shifts over time with LED degradation have plagued the manufacturers.

Color efficacy advances were announced by Cree with a 70 lpw for the XLamp 7090 and Lumileds' Luxeon I was rated at 45 lpw for 5500K white; however, manufacturer data represented performance under laboratory conditions of controled temperature, pulsed operation (not continuous), and performance depended on electrical, thermal design.

Consumer products often use clusters of 5 mm LEDs and they have lower efficacy, low wattage and low light output.  Research is improving SSL efficacy while decreasing price.

Potential near term applications of LEDs include:

  • Airplane reading lights
  • Accent lights and focused light applications
  • Task lights and desk lights
  • Under cabinet lights
  • Display cases, including refrigerated
  • Elevators with longer life and vibration resistance
  • Architectural applications for hard to reach locations.

Energy Star for Cost-effective Illuminated Exit Signs

Illuminated exit signs are an important and legally required safety feature in a facility, be it a manufacturing plant, a public meeting facility or an apartment building.

In the case of an emergency such as a fire, their operation is critical in protecting the well being of residents, employees or visitors.

By design, exit signs operate 24 hours per day, and can consume large amounts of energy to operate. Many exit signs in today’s buildings use older, incandescent and fluorescent/compact fluorescent lighting (CFL) technology. To make matters worse, many older exit signs require frequent maintenance due to the short life span of the lamps that light them. For example, many older exit signs consume over 350 kilowatt-hours (kWh) and cost $28 each annually to operate.

Advances in the technology of solid-state light-emitting diodes (LED)  have allowed exit sign manufacturers to develop signs that harness the advantages of this technology at competitive costs. In addition, exit signs are easy to install, if you can install a light switch or electrical receptacle you can install an exit sign.

Advantages of LED Exit Signs:

Ultra-low energy usage.  Energy Star labeled LED exit signs use approximately 44 kWh of electricity annually to operate. Low energy use not only means less pollution but also lower electricity bills as a LED exit sign usually costs less than $4 annually to operate.

Low maintnance. Energy Star labeled LED exit signs must be guaranteed to last at least 5 years, however, many manufacturers state that their lamps will maintain National Fire Protection Association compliant levels of luminance for 10 to 25 years.

Safety: LED exit signs are usually brighter than comparable incandescent or fluorescent signs, and have greater contrast with their background due to the monochromatic nature of the light that LEDs emit.
Exit Sign Features

LED Color: Exit signs come in two colors, green or red. Choosing what color is right for your facility depends on   aesthetics and local regulations. Check with your local building codes office or fire officials before purchasing any exit sign.

LED Battery Back-up: To ensure a powered exit sign remains lit during an emergency if the building’s electrical system is interrupted, many exit signs come with a battery back-up or offer this feature as an option. Some localities may require that a battery back-up be installed with any exit sign so consult your local building codes office or fire officials before purchasing.

LED Emergency Lighting: Some exit signs have integrated emergency lighting; if your current exit sign has integrated emergency lighting you can replace it with a combined LED exit sign/emergency lighting unit or install emergency lighting separately from your exit sign.

LED Voltage: LED exit signs are available that are compatible with either 120 volt or 277 volt power. Many models are variable voltage and will operate properly on both voltage levels.

Ask your architect or designer to use only LED exit signs in your new building. And LED exit signs are an ideal replacement in current buildings, but you need to determine what kind of exit sign your facility already has. LED exit signs provide the best balance of safety, low maintenance, and very low energy usage compared to other exit sign technologies.

Lumileds Lighting Brought Luxeon Technology to Market

Lumileds was formed as a 50/50 joint venture between Agilent Technologies (formerly part of Hewlett Packard) and Philips Lighting. Hewlet Packard's LED developments had advanced to a point at which LED technology could be thought about in lighting terms, and discussions began with Philips Lighting. Agilent provided the technology, people, and facility, selling 50% of its division to Philips, which in turn provided the funding and packaging infrastructure. Lumileds and Agilents combined LED sales revenue is currently $175 million.

Based in San Jose, Lumileds employs 700 people worldwide. 350 people work in Silicon Valley, while the majority of the rest of the workforce is based in Malaysia, in the packaging plant. Manufacturing the LEDs (by growing the crystals in a process called epitaxy) is done in Silicon Valley. Between 30-40% of its sales are to the automotive industry. Fifteen percent of Lumileds employees work in the R&D department, most in San Jose, but supported by a small team in Best, The Netherlands.

Leading the way in the development of high-flux, high-powered LED (light emitting diode) technology is Lumileds Lighting. In a few years time the company envisages our homes will be powered by LED technology, using materials that will last for 100,000 hours and run at a fraction of the energy cost.

Lumiled was the first company to specifically target the high brightness, high-power, large chip LED market. In February 2001, Lumileds demonstrated a single white LED with an output of 17 lumens a white light output four times higher than the best known white LED. In March, it announced a new solution for LCD display backlights, which will greatly change the industry.

High flux Luxeon light sources offer a larger range of real-life colour and saturation.

Trends in LED Lighting

Light emitting diodes (LEDs) are semiconductor sources, producing light in a solid state manner.

Small LEDs have been all around us on our computer printers and television sets for many years.

Today's innovations in LED technology have developed processes to make much larger LEDs, which produce high amounts of light enough to power a traffic signal or a tailgate light on an automobile.

In a few years time leaders in the LED industry envision our homes being powered by LED technology, using materials that will last for 100,000 hours and run at a fraction of the energy cost.

Another environmentally friendly aspect of LED technology is that it does not use mercury, unlike fluorescent lighting. As the product lasts twelve years, disposal is less of a problem.

For the last 25 years, as an opto-electronics division, Hewlett Packard had been developing LED technology, finding ways of making light brighter and brighter.

LED Grow Lights for Agriculture and Gardening

LED Grow Lights are emerging as an alternative to metal halide and high pressure sodium garden lights. They offer three benefits:

  • more blue and red light in specific colors that aid photosynthesis
  • significant power savings over metal halide and high pressure sodium grow lights
  • and they run cool, saving on air conditioning costs.
RESOURCE: California Green Solutions

Controlling electricity costs is becoming more important in agriculture as the cost of water and fuel increase.  Because LED lights reduce energy costs by 50 - 80%, they provide real production savings for greenhouses and hothouses.
