Phantom LED Strip Lights for Retail Showcases

Hidden strip lights provide task lighting under counters, cabinets, accent shelves and even bookshelves. LED light strips generate only a small fraction of the heat of incandescent or Xenon lights. The radiant heat of each individual LED lamp is roughly equivalent to that of a 1 watt light bulb.

LED strip lights also provide an ideal source of retail showcase lighting that displays heat-sensitive items. Products such as makeup, textiles, foods, and produce, can quickly deteriorate when exposed to radiant heat and/or ultraviolet light.

Museum lighting of historical documents, antiques, and ancient artifacts. Jewelry stores prefer LED strip lights that provide high level of color temperature precision.

In addition to the primary colors of red, blue, and green, LED cabinet lights come in warm white and daylight. Two or more of these colors can be mixed together to achieve custom illumination that brings out the details of a fine cut diamond, or that highlights intricate patterns carved in precious metal jewelry.

LED strip lights come in a variety of trims. There are three mounting categories: Horizontal, Vertical, and Cove. All trims are custom made to fit your needs. We never take a stock fixture and modify it to fit your cabinet.

LED strip light bulbs are also installed in larger industrial spaces as energy savers and contributors to LEED green building certification.

In lighting installations where scaffolding or lifts must be used to replace bulbs in ceiling lighting systems in hard to reach areas or tall rooms, LED light lamps reduce costs by lengthening lamp replacement cycles -- and saving maintenance costs (as well as replacement bulb costs).

One high quality lighting provider is Phantom Lighting System. This national company is a pioneer, Houston-based art lighting company and low voltage lighting manufacturer that services the lighting and design community. Phantom Contour Projector and Phantom strip lights feature lighting technology includes a revolutionary approach to decorative picture lighting and low voltage display, shelf, and under cabinet lighting.

Next Generation Lighting Industry Alliance for LEDs and OLEDs

According to the Department of Energy (DOE), lighting accounts for 8% of all energy consumption in the United States and 22% of electricity nationwide.

LEDs have the potential to reach 200 lm/W, compared to the efficacies of incandescent lamps at 15 lm/W and fluorescent tubes at 90 lm/W.

If solid-state lighting (SSL) replaced all existing lights, the DOE estimates customer savings of $115 billion by 2025 and a 10% reduction in greenhouse emission gases.

The Next Generation Lighting Industry Alliance (NGLIA) was formed in 2003 to foster the technical development and commercialization of solid state lighting systems such as LEDs.

The Alliance was designated in 2005 as the “industry partner” by the U.S. Department of Energy for its Solid State Lighting (SSL) program. The SSL Program researches, develops, and conducts demonstrations of advanced solid state white lighting technologies based on inorganic and organic light emitting diodes (LEDs and OLEDs).

The physical behaviors exhibited by solid state materials are substantially different from traditional lighting technologies. NGLIA promotes the understanding, implementation, and adoption of semiconductor light sources in specialty and general lighting systems. The industry will continue to evaluate new technologies and adopt those that fall within the category of solid state lighting category.

Once only used for indicator lights, SSL technology is now found in a variety of specialty and niche applications, including automotive brake lights, traffic signals, exit signs, and flashlights.

Colored SSL is now a viable alternative to conventional lighting sources in many architectural and entertainment applications - from the lighting of exterior facades to stage sets and retail displays.

As white LEDs continue to develop, they too will be applied in higher-luminance applications.

Lightbulb and Base Shapes and Sizes

Bulb Sizes and Shapes

A light bulb, also called a lamp, is referred to by one or two letters, indicating the shape, followed by a number, indicating the diameter, in eights of an inch.

Getting the right bulb size and shape is as important as getting the right wattage...or the right base type and size.

Common bulbs include:

A Standard household bulb
R Reflector
BR Bulge Reflector
PAR Parabolic Reflector
C Night light, holiday string bulb or candelabra bulb

Some bulbs, such as ALR37mm and ALR56mm do not follow the rules. First they have 3 letters, not 2, and second, they use metric diameters.

Also, mini and globe holiday lights tend to be sold by the metric diameter, in millimeters. An M5 is a "mini" tube with a 5 mm diameter (about 1/5 of an inch.) A G12mm is a "globe" with a 12 mm diameter (just under 1/2 inch.) A G25mm is a "globe" with a 25mm diameter (about an inch.)

At EnvironmentalLights.com, the diameter is in eighths of an inch, unless it says mm, as in the ALR37mm example.

Typically, the wattage goes in front of the bulb shape, so our 50PAR30L is a 50 Watt PAR 30 long neck.

See a diagram of bulb sizes at the EnvironmetnalLights.com website.

Bulb Bases

If you want to get to first base in the bulb business, you have to get the base to fit into the socket.

The Standard “Medium” base is an E26. Except, of course, when it’s an E27. This is what happens when different parts of the world with different standard bases trade with each other. For all intents and purposes, an E26 and E27 are interchangeable. In deference to our manufacturers, if they call their lamp an E27, so do we. It’ll fit (or we wouldn’t sell it.)

Check the Environmentallights.com website for a great overview of Bulb Bases ... and other articles.

EPAct Commercial Lighting Tax Deduction for Energy Efficiency

The Energy Policy Act of 2005 created the Energy Efficient Commercial Buildings Deduction, which allows building owners to deduct the entire cost of a lighting or building upgrade in the year the equipment is placed in service, subject to a cap.

The LightingTaxDeduction.com website, was developed by the Lighting Systems Division of the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) in cooperation with the Commercial Building Tax Deduction Coalition, to provide information about  lighting deductions and resources.

The Energy Policy Act of 2005 (EPAct 2005) includes a tax deduction for energy efficient buildings systems up to $1.80 per square foot for buildings designed for 50 percent energy cost savings relative to a building designed to and within the scope of ASHRAE 90.1-2001 Energy Standard for Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings. There are five alternative ways a building system(s) may qualify.

  • The whole building may qualify for up to $1.80 per square foot; or
  • Lighting systems; or
  • HVAC/water heating; or
  • Building envelope may each qualify for up to a $0.60 per square foot deduction for their contribution to the 50 percent savings (defined by the Internal Revenue Service as 16 2/3% whole buildings savings); or
  • Lighting may receive an up to a $0.30 to $0.60 deduction for reductions in lighting power density from ASHRAE 90.1-2001 tabular values of 25 percent to 40 percent respectively, with linear interpolation between 25 and 40 percent.

LED Lighting Equipment for Corporate and Special Events

Many corporations, churches, museums, and other organizations hold special events that require special lighting for speakers, entertainment and even displays and booths. These commercial clients rely on lighting consultation for the best design and technical advice because there's nothing as embarrassing as having the lighting system fail for a live event!

Over the past few years, lighting consultation services have been growing significantly as non-lighting event planners and company marketing managers realize they aren’t knowledgeable enough about lighting systems, LED technologies, and programmable light shows to get the job done on their own. There's just way too much to consider when it comes to event lighting. There are technical and practical considerations.

It's important to plan early for lighting design and management. Lighting is a dynamic part of event planning and can add dimensions of movement, mood and focus that no other element of an event delivers for meeting or convention attendees.

If you've ever been to a company party with a generous budget, you've probably witnessed the power of lighting at its finest. Strobes, spotlights, special effects - they all come together for an experience of wonder and excitement. Designing an evening's experience that includes different types of lighting applications is a great way to transform a meeting or gala into an exciting, elegant environment that develops a mood of excitement and energy.

Creative lighting designers will turn the client's dream into a manageable system using an appropriate assortment of lighting fixtures, filters, and programmable effects. And LED lights are becoming the staple of event lighting as the LED technologies are expanded. LEDs offer low energy use, low heat and safety for the lighting system workers themselves.

Trade Show Lighting

The two most important attributes of trade show lighting are light weight and portability. Booths usually benefit from the use of clamp fixtures because they are versatile and attach easily to a display or booth divider rod.

Clamp lights also highlight areas effectively and can be used for general illumination with the right bulbs. Clamp lights illuminate any direction without requiring much surface space in the booth.

Halogen and fluorescent provide bright and efficient lighting and they are relatively inexpensive. LED lights for displays are being developed rapidly and their light weight, tolerance of vibration and resistance to breakage are great benefits for tradeshow booths that have to travel. Their long life is also helpful and reduces problems with bulb replacement while on the road.

LED Mood Lights for Accent Lighting

Mood lighting is all about color and dazzle!  And LED lights deliver brilliant color, programmable light shows and even responsive color change based on interaction with people...or pets.  Here are some of my favorite LED mood lighting videos that show the variety of fixture sizes, shapes, and programed light shows.
<P>
The important thing to remember is that all light uses energy... conservation of energy should always be a design consideration for any lighting application -- our mothership need our conscientious choices.   Yeah, yeah -- just because we CAN do something doesn't necessarily mean we SHOULD. :-)

LED mood lighting can provide soft ambient lighting for homes and offices, or attract attention in a retail window, at a tradeshow or event. LED accent lighting can be equipped with motion detectors and programmed with chips and controllers to design intensity by activating portions of arrays of LED bulbs, or morphing from color to color.

From a design standpoint, less is better! A modest amount of dynamic light control can get attention and hold one spellbound -- too much color and chaos can overwhelm and drive people away!

LED Bulb Features and Benefits

LED bulbs come in most popular bulb sizes for commercial applications -- including multidirectional and straight connections for A19, S14L, S11, G11, G15, G25, G30 bulb size packages. Standard screw-in or Edison connections are also available. LED bulbs are increasingly being developed to fit into everyday applications and are proving to be cost effective over the lifetime by saving up to 90% of energy costs. Their 10,000 to 100,000 hours of lifetime operations also reduce the cost of replacing bulbs, the actual cost of multiple incandescent or fluorescent bulbs that would require purchase and replacement during those long lifespans...and they operate with low radiated heat. Low heat also reduces the need for ambient room air conditioning, thus producing additional energy savings.

Polycarbonate bulb designs ( vs. glass bulbs) make LED bulbs safer in applications that deal with vibrations and breakage.

Just think, light bulbs that can potentially provide 100,000 hours of light -- that's 11 years!

LED lights come in a wide variety of colors and wattages that can be adjusted by massing arrays of tiny LED bulbs in a single fixture. LED light can provide night time and task lighting, or they can provide low cost decorative light that is highly programmable for dynamic light displays.

Commercial applications that require 24/7 operations are highly cost-effective applications for LED lights. Some applications include time/temperature signs, theme parks, stage lighting, architectural lighting such light walls and ceilings, carnivals, hotels, military, and industrial emergency lighting.

LED lights come in a wide range of Red, Orange, Blue, Yellow, Aqua Green, Cool White, and their energy efficiency varies by color. Check with your local utility company for technical details about energy efficiency ratings for different kinds and colors of LED lighting systems.

Additional color controls can be added to LED light arrays with tinted lenses, flare lenses, and frosted Lenses.

This video provides a nice technical overview of LED bulbs, their sizes, shapes, wattages, and colors.

LED Traffic Lights for Safety & Savings

LED traffic lights provide longer life, brighter visibility and less maintenance. Maintenance is critical in life and death applications such as railroad crossings and road closures. LED caution lights also provide an added level of safety for traffic because they can be seen at a greater distance than traditional lights.

The longer life up up to 10,000 hours can reduce maintenance costs for replacement, as well as reduce the overall cost of bulbs. The long life lamps also save energy and can be operated with alternative energy sources such as solar panels or wind energy.

LED traffic lights come in Green, Yellow and Red, and are usually shock and vibration resistant because the bulb coverings are made of polycarbonate, not glass.

Some brands have been CalTrans approved and meet ITE specifications.
